    • note, dyson describes their refurbs as so:

The product is “refurbished” which means that it has been returned from the retailer.
but a lot of people in the last dyson refurb threat complained about how beat up their order was when they got it. mine works fine, but it came dirty and scratched up like it had been used for a year and returned because it was broken, not used for a day and returned to the retailer... as dyson suggests. buyer take note.

    • Really? Wow. I got a DC25 and it looks and works like brand new, I never would have known the difference from a non-refurb.

    • Not a good deal. Wait till they go on sale in US from Target or Walmart.

    • Good deal for Canadians. The unappealing re-furbished model being referred to was probably the portable cordless ones. Sort of expected as the unit will get banged around more than the larger rolling home ones.

    • I ordered a refurb DC26 for $299 a few weeks ago.
The canister, unit itself, and the attachments all looked new.
The only thing that looked used was the long tube that retracts - it looked a little worn but not a big deal.

At Target in the states it is $399 regular price for a brand new one, and $219 when on sale recently, plus another $80 gift card, but YMMV.
Unless you are in the US often, chances are it'll be out of stock pretty quickly if they ever go on sale again at the $219 sales price.

    • I bought both a DC 14 Animal refurb and a handheld refurb and both were BNIB, or indistinguishable from such. I guess it's the Dyson refurb lotto.

    • OP: Your title would lead us to believe that the DC33 and DC26 refurbs were selling for $499 initially. Is that indeed the case, or is that the price of a non-refurb unit? If it's the price of a non-refurb, you may want to make your title more accurate.

    • Anyone have the DC26?

I've got 1K sq ft of hardwood and 2 dogs - do you think it is suitable?

    • Hey guys,

Thought I'd share my thoughts on my experience/reasoning for going Dyson refurb.

I bought my upright Dyson refurb in the summer of 2009 for about half the price of retail. The way I saw it: Retail had a 5 year warranty, refurb had a 2 year warranty. If it lasted two years and then died, then I'd have buy a "new refurb" in 2011 and still be ahead (as long as the new one didn't die right at 2 years too). I understand I'm comparing full retail price, but in general in Canada you don't get much more than 10-15% savings on Dyson vacuums.

The vacuum is now three years old and going strong (two dogs, child, and relatively heavy usage). The way I see it I'm ahead.

I also picked up the latest cordless model brand new in the US (on sale) and am very happy with it. It worked out to about half the price of Canadian retail and I use it for cleaning the mess my toddler makes, vacuum the stairs (the one thing my upright stinks at), and to clean my car once a week. I love it.

Anyways, long story short I know there are complaints about Dyson's not being of as high quality as years ago, and the refurbs coming in used... but I've only had a great experience. And with the warranty and ability to return the damaged/used vacuum - I don't see much of a risk.

These vacuums definitely pick up a lot more than your average hoover and are well worth the price.

Now I have a question: Does anyone have experience with the canister vacuums? Do they suck as strong as the uprights, and do they store as much dirt? The upright is a bit heavy and awkward for both my cleaning lady to carry, so if it ever dies I'm wondering if the canister is a good replacement.

      And thanks for posting op!

    • Thanks OP, searched around a bit and based on reviews the DC33 is a solid model and at a good price point even when looking at US sites. Hopefully the refurbs will be in good condition, ordered one, let's see how it goes

    • I would never buy Dyson refurb again. I bought one handheld unit and it's all scratched up and dust in the bin. Looks like someone used it for months, returned and Dyson staff just put it in a brown box without even cleaning it. So, for the price, you're looking at a used item, nothing remotely close to new. Not hot deal at all.

I wasn't happy and called Dyson. The manager explain that these are indeed used and return item. They never intended to sell "near new" stuff as refurb....

    • I was fortunate to be travelling in the US during this target "sale", and managed to snatch up a new DC26 multifloor. This sale didn't last long, as it was later revealed to be a pricing error. (fyi, $250USD seems to be more of typical price for a refurbed model)

So far I love it, it does an amazing job on hardwood floors (which it comes with a head specifically designed for it)

    • I just wanted to say that I bought a refurb dyson DC35 from dyson and it is a fantastic machine. It looks almost new and I have no problems with it at all. There are a few scuffs on the bottom where the battery goes but thats pretty much it. I love it and would definitely buy another refurb. I paid $209+tax for my dc35 with free shipping. It retails for $349 new. But IMO its worth the new price. This is my first dyson.

dyson vacuums rate "okay" in the consumer reports reviews. you can get a hoover or a kenmore that performs the same or better for the same or less money. I think DC35 is a standout because no other company is ludicrous enough to make a $350 dust buster, and I am ludicrous enough to want one.

I'll spoil the CR reviews for you. the only dyson they recommend is the Dyson DC28 Animal. and they recommend two Hoover and two LG ahead of it. their best buy is a Hoover WindTunnel T-Series Rewind Bagless UH70120 for around $150, and it has excellent user reviews as well. compare that to $400+ for the LG and dyson which they don't think is any better. PS: it is worth noting that the highest rated bagless vacuums (the category dyson competes in) have slightly lower ratings than the highest rated bagged ones.

vacuums vary a lot on mutually exclusive attributes, and your choice of vacuum should depend on your preferences for these attributes, not the brand name. do you need a light vacuum? do you need a bag to keep the dust away from you? do you need it to be awesome at carpets? do you need it to be awesome at pet hair? do you need it to be quiet? you can't get it all one one vacuum.

    • I have the DC26 and its damn light and sucks in a good way..gets into corners and does a excellent job on hardwood floors and decent job on shag carpets...its takes a few sweeps on deeper carpets but it does clean it by the look of the debris spinning inside the cannister. The arms extends out to reach higher locations and the retractable cord is sweet. The only issue is the canister is so light sometimes it flips over if you pull it too hard when turning.

    • I just received my refurbished dc23, the retractable wand is defective one of the elbows does not stay in place when retracted.
How do I use the warranty service? Do I have to pay for shipment?
