If you eat and prepare a lot of rice, you may be interested in some of the Zojirushi rice cookers on sale at Amazon.ca. For the uninitiated, Zojirushi is a Japanese manufacturer that makes, among other things, high end kitchen appliances like rice cookers, water boilers, and bread makers. • HI Totoriko. I can't actually answer that. But if you search RFD for Zojirushi, you'll find a lot of debate and discussion on this topic. Some say that a $20 Black and Decker is just as good. Some like the Korean branch Cuckoo but given my background, I've seen a lot of the Cuckoo rice cookers in family homes and many of them look like they haven't been able to handle the heat that they generate and so plastic pieces are deformed. Others suggest the Tiger brand is also good and can be picked up at some stores in Pacific Mall.

For me, I really wanted a pressure cooker because my son loves the rice that comes out of my mum's pressure cooker.

      Good luck!

    • This is the best one of the lot (IMHO):

The Umami setting is unique and gives you the best rice I have ever had. It has the nicer finish, the heavy duty cooking pot and is just the right size - not too big and not too small. Good for couples and small families (2-6 people). This brand is probably the best in the world from the reviews. It seems built like a tank.

I paid more than this so it's a great deal.

    • The Zojirushi BB-CEC20BA Home Bakery Supreme is on for $194.94 as well. It's been slightly lower before (over a year ago) but I've been watching this one for a long time and it finally dropped. Thanks for making me check!

    • I have the NC HTC 18.

My life evolve around rice every day even sundays. and i can tell you, it worth every penny. Not only you get variety rice, the cooker itself adjust the cooking for you so all rice are feeling the same every parts.

Here is an example, yesterday i started to cook rice...after 10 min in, i got a call saying we need to add more rice. So guess what i did? I open up the can and put new rice in it while the cooked one is almost form. I put water back in and eventually all the rice came out exactly the same despite the mess up procedure.

The rice done by this cooker usually have "longer" rice then normal rice making the texture amazingly soft or hard depend on how you want.

amazing cooker and i love the tune.

    • Zojirushi is one of (if not the biggest) brands of Rice Cookers and Hot Water Dispensers (for tea) in Japan.
Trust a nation of folks who eat rice with every meal on the quality of their rice cookers.

    • I think you linked to the wrong one. The highly rated UMAMI mode is the NS YAC 10 or NS YAC 18.

    • I just bought one of their lower end unit a week ago and hope the rice it cooks turns out just as you all make them out to be. That cold unit looks badass on a countertop

    • We’ve used a National (Panasonic) rice cooker for over 20 years. It’s a great piece of machinery - still works great - but then I gifted a HBC10 for the family.
I was a bit skeptical at first about how much tastier/better rice could get (after all we’ve cooked the same brand of rice the same way, with the same rice cooker for over 20 years)…but after about 6 months of usage I think the HBC10 was a great investment.

The rice tasted exceptional for someone who eats it daily. Noticeably fluffier, softer and overall better cooked – I found myself having second helpings more often (good and bad :P).

If you include rice in your meals like it’s a religion, then I recommend the HBC10 or one that has multiple cooking functions and the induction heating feature.
If you fall into eating rice occasionally, then this product might be overkill for you.

    • Can someone explain the difference between a $200 and a $20 black and decker? I mean besides extra little features like keeping rice warm, or works on a timer or whatever, when it comes down to it, it's just a nonstick pot with a heating element under it, is the final product really that much different which cooker you cook it in?

    • Hmm, Five Guys and McDonalds both make burgers - however the quality is not the same therefore the higher prices at five guys. Similar to B&D and a Zoj, B&D makes rice true, however the quality of the Zoj is way way better.

    • I checked camel, and for the NS-ZCC18 10 cup the lowest was $140, around last Xmas. Though $178 is a good % off, I'll wait a few more months to see if the xmas break drops it down to that price level again.

IIRC a week or so back I was at One's @ Pacific Mall (GTA), and they were having a sale for the zoji's for about the same price level, so this feels warm for me.

I can't dive into the science of cooking rice... I just press the button to cook and then eat it.
Like I said if you don't eat rice every day, you will get your fill with a black & decker because rice is rice to you.
But if you eat it everyday...literally as a staple for your meals... you will notice a difference in the final product.

Kind of like asking - why buy a Webber $1000 bbq when I can find a stainless steel in-house brand for about $200 at Wally worlds? Both can cook a steak because when it comes down to it... its just lighting a flame under a steel/cast iron grill right?
Well different btu levels, cast-iron grill vs steel, more/better controls, induction cooking, better build quality, improved burners.... they woould all contribute to a better cooking experience and a steak.

    • As a guy with a $20 B&D Rice Cooker, here's my thoughts:
      - you need to watch it almost constantly, or it'll overcook your rice.
      - even on the 'keep warm' setting, it'll continue to cook your rice. You must unplug it at the right time, or you get watery (too soon) or crusty (too late) rice.
      - Basically, it's a convenience appliance that has minimal convenience when done cheaply - like the $20 special. Now that I type this out, I think I should just donate the thing, and then someone can get it for $5.

If I ate rice more often or minded using the stovetop on occasion, I'd be all over a Zojirushi or a Tiger...like white on rice!

    • While I get that it has it's advantages over a standard $20.0 rice cooker, I just can't get over the fact that I have to pay almost $300.00 for something to cook rice. When it comes down to it, properly cooked rice is properly cooked rice. Do it enough and you'll never have to deal with undercooked or overcooked rice even if you just used the most basic pot and water. Cook the rice right before each meal and you'll never have to keep it warm or deal with crusty rice either.

My crappy breville doesn't really cut it.. it makes a crust from the bottom layer of rice.

      It's a great machine. I have one.

The new zojirushi bread machine looks to be a substantial upgrade, however.... (PAC20). Heating element on top, better control module, and other improvements.
