  For the love of god, don't buy it through EA. You don't get unlimited redownloads but pay for 6month-2year privilege. It uses Digital River.

- I've never used Steam, Direct2Drive or any of those services, but the THQ pack is tempting. I've always wanted to play Stalker and I've heard Company of Heroes is good too. Plus, throw in Saints 2 and Red Faction trilogy and that's an amazing value.

  Steam has its flaws, but I really like it. You get unlimited redownloads, automatic patching, and can use your account on as many computers as you want (provided you aren't sharing it, or trying to use it two places at once.) That said, some games on Steam still have limited activations through Securom, etc. so check carefully before you buy games published by bigger companies like Activision or Ubisoft.
  
  Some games also use Steam Cloud, which is a service that stores some of your settings and profiles online and auto-imports then when you play your game on another PC. There's community features too, like friend lists, instant messaging, and community groups.
  
  Basically, I feel pretty confident that I'll be able to play my games on Steam for years to come. I haven't used Stardock's Impulse, but given the company's reputation I think that one's pretty safe too. With other services, I'm not so sure. EA's service has limited downloads, for example.

  There's a ton of reasons, but one of the major ones is limited activations. If you're given a limit of 5 activations, you can only install the game 5 times. After that, you can't install the game anymore unless you either call up the publisher for more activations (assuming they'll even do this), or buy the game again.
