GTA: Free Just for Laughs Showcases @ Yonge-Dundas Square on July 17/18 (inc. Russel Peters)

If you live in Toronto or you'll be there on July 17 or July 18, you can catch some free comedy showcases at Yonge-Dundas Square. Russel Peters is featured as the host (on July 18 at least). This is a part of the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival, (the Toronto part of the festival runs between July 15 and July 19). Here's how the free shows shape up:

Friday July 17
  • 8:30 pm - Dan Finnerty & The Dan Band
  • 9:30 pm - Gregory Charles & his band
Saturday July 18
  • 8:30 pm - Russell Peters, with friends Angelo Tsarouchas and Steve Byrne
  • 9:30 pm - Gregory Charles & his band

    • I really think he's unfunny and relies on race jokes too much. His jokes about other aspects of life are crass and completely amateur.

      That said, if you're going, don't go early because if you're a minority, in the front row of a free show, he'll rip into you.

      That's all he knows how to do.

      check out his joke about a cashier girl on Youtube. He has a wide repetoire of material other than his jokes and impersonations of minorities... but he rarely steps outside of that comfort zone anymore.

      Btw, it's only 1hour and that's with his big fat Greek friend Angelo...hmmm.


      Also, try to get into those restaurants with a balcony at Toronto Life Square..you could easily avoid the crowd and watch from the balcony. I saw people do this at DesiFest back in late May.

    • you better show up early if you want to see this but I won't be going. His material is declining and its declining fast. Red, White and Brown was barely funny with only some jokes being good and the majority of the being bad.

      He is still riding the high of his initial breakout.

      I also saw Red, White and Brown ... he was not funny at all and is definately losing his mojo, it's no wonder he is performing for free !

      LOL not being racist or anything but in Downtown Tornoto...its NON-Asians that are the minority! <--which he usually makes the driving jokes about and then comes the indian jokes #2 on his list that make fun of accents and Somebody gonna get a hurt real bad....SOMEBODY!!!!!....and taxi driving and then comes arabs being terrorists...
      And then...a joke with all 3...
      An asian guy and a car accident....HMMM??
      An indian guy and a 7/11...What do you think?
      An arab guy and an explosion....OMG!!!!

      Not only downtown are whites the minority, I notice how he treads very lightly with the black community... careful not to offend them, in fact he boosts their ego by constantly mentioning the size of their penises.

      Only black comedians can get away with joking about blacks without appearing as a racist. Any other race is fair game, but Peters is just not funny anymore.

    • If it is like last year, he will just be hosting the comedy show and have 3 other comedians do most of the jokes and just do little introductions and a few jokes in between sets. One of the guys was REALLY bad last year, but, still, worth while checking out.

      A bunch of other events happening that weekend too (sorry, don't have a link handy)

    • I've never understood why is this guy so popular (among certain demography). Most of his jokes are not witty. And his race based jokes are starting to sound like broken record now. There are many better and really witty Canadian comedians out there that don't get that kind of media attention.

      His Chinese accent is soooooooo goooot, sounds like Wok with Yan. Damn, anyone young enough to remember his cooking show with Chinese Magic Powder!

      To each his/her own, but I loved Red, White, & Brown. Check out youtube for some of his older stand-up and see him live, you will not regret it.
