GTA: Winterlicious from January 27-February 9 (Reservations Begin Jan 10 with AmEx, Jan 12 Without)

It's almost that time again! The always-popular Winterlicious Event runs from January 27 to February 9 at participating restaurants in the GTA.

If you're unfamiliar with Winterlicious, it's an opportunity to sample some fine cuisine at great, fixed prices. Tons of Toronto restaurants participate. You'll be able to select from 3-course menus with $15, $20 or $25 lunches and $25, $35 or $45 dinners. You can see the full list of Winterlicious restaurants here.

Restaurants will begin accepting reservations beginning January 12 -- but if you've got an American Express credit card, you can make your reservations starting January 10. Since the best restaurants will sell out quickly, a two-day head start is nothing to cough at!

      Why would you be fooled? The link is clearly a City of Toronto website (toronto.ca) as it is sponsored by the City of Toronto.

      ya...in hindsight, I agree with you. Oh well...just was hoping for something closer to home.

      On another note, in prior years, I have tried Auberge de Pommier and Wildfire and would recommend Auberge.

      I went to Ultra Supper Club last year and it wasn't bad. I'm looking at checking out Brassaii, earth Bloor West or The Old Mill Inn this year.

      ya...in hindsight, I agree with you. Oh well...just was hoping for something closer to home.

      I used to live near Brassaii and it is a nice place. I now live near earth Bloor West and walked over there the other night for drinks but I didn't try the food. The drinks weren't outrageously priced, but the place lacks something in the decor... it was pretty dead (well it was a tuesday night after the holidays) so it might have been the lack of people but inside it felt too "cold" (not temperature wise) to me I don't even recall there being background music. It might feel better during a busy dinner service.

      I think I saw an $18 burger on the menu at the bar. Might have been why I decided to go to for a burger elsewhere on Bloor afterwards hehe.

      I recently moved to Durham region from Montreal and have not been able to find anything noteworthy. We went to what is supposed to be the #1 resto in Durham. It was okay, but with wine, you end up about $100 per person, and frankly, the food and especially the bread was nowhere near as good as the average resto in Montreal. We use to go to this great place for lunch with an $11.50 lunch special and bring your own wine, and the food was better, with he bread being 50x's better. And when I say Montreal, the restaurants in the suburbs are superb compared to GTA.

      If anyone knows of good restaurants around Durham, I am all ears!

      Get used to this... toronto is housed by thosuands of mediocre to horrible restaurants and they are all in business because torontonians like mediocre to horrible food... You can look at the list of restaurants on winterlicious none of them are great or good. Toronto is a city of teeny boppers and sheep, people tend to like what they perceive as what other "cool" people may like.

      There are a handful of places in toronto that concentrate on quality of food than anything else but then they are all secret gems of the city.

      Have you tried Casa Verde in Ajax/Pickering (Old Kingston Rd)? I used to go there on special occasions. Good food, good wine. Fairly pricey though.

      First I heard of it. On the website they seem to have a nice little terasse. I think I will try this place in the summer. tx!

      Make reservations before going and make sure you order the zabayon (zabaglione?) for dessert. It's to die for.

      I have to agree with most of what you said, I feel like the food quality has gone down and prices have gone thru the roof since the 90's + which is why I don't enjoy going out as much as I used to. Plus most Torontonians are sheep, and the worse part of the teeny bopper attitude is that its not just teens, its even grown who act like teens as well. used to have great restaurants but a lot of them got shut down or changed.

      I'd like to get your opinion on what these secret gems are and what are some of your fav spot? You can PM me too if you wnat to keep it still secret.

      I do agree that there are thousands of mediocre restaurants...but that's true for almost every big city!

      I do agree that there are thousands of mediocre restaurants...but that's true for almost every big city!
      There are many restaurants that start out good and their quality and consistency suffers.. depends on what kind of food are you looking for.

      - 7 numbers e.g used to be very decent and decently priced (one with rosa working) and its hit n miss now as they have gotten very popular and they are not consistent.

      - Avant Goute is still one of my fav places to go to.. its not cheap but its good quality food i wouldn't say out of this world but everything is freshly prepared and nothing is frozen and he has little to no line cooks so less to screw up.

      - Lakes used to be good but so so now...

      - Simple Bistro on Mt Pleasant is hit n miss they have changed the chef so the food is not as good as before.

      - Scaramouche seems to be ok still but still i prefer avant goute over scaramouche.

      - Splendido used to be very decent not sure as i havn't been there in years... dave's new restaurant nota bene i hear is not as good on queen.

      - Provence Délices used to be very decent but is always a hit n miss nowadays...

      There are probably few more i am missing and i am sure there are many other good restaurants.. depends on the cuisine i supppose i havnt been to all the restaurants in toronto, and i would never go to a restaurant based on "reviews". I am lucky enough to have freinds in the restaurant business that do food so we tend to do cooking at home as a get together or if we go out we rarely do fine dining.

      For pizza i would suggest people invest in making pizza at home i have not had a pizza that was worth mentioning and i have been to all the usual suspects.. libereto, terroni... etc etc.


      There are a lot of other restaurants that have the facade of being fine dining and the food is all horrible with salty sugary generic sauces and dishes. Prime example is all restaurants at shops at don mills.
      Besides that i find many tiny restos but wouldn't consider them to be fine dining.
      I have yet to explore restaurants in the east end pickering/ajax area so no comment on places outisde of toronto.

    • I haven't been a fan of the licious events for the past year or so. Only one place has gotten me to return on several occasions and that is The Corner House (right next to Casa Loma).

      They normally have a fixed prix menu even during the non-licious times (like right now). $35 dinner. The place is a bit small though (converted house) but I really like the food there.

    • I liked Bloom restaurant before, but was dissapointed with Winterlicious menu this time.

      1. Crispy Calamari - very spicy with extremely spicy sauce
      2. Pork Tenderloin - tasted like it was kept in a vinegar for a long time
      3. Congri Rice Cake (Chef’s Favourite Dish) - the presentation was nice, but the dark colour rice underneath was not tasty. French fries on top were OK.
      4. Dessert - Chocolate-Dulce de Leche Blossom. There was a bit of some cream or mousse served on the bottom of a wine glass, with a slice of strawberry on top. I have no idea, why they called that Blossom, but fancy name should not replace quality.
