Chapters has just launched an in-store points program (similar to other retailer-specific points programs, like the Shoppers Optimum Points program). It's called Plum Rewards and you'll get 10 Plum Points for each dollar you spend in-store. Unfortunately, points cannot be accumulated on online purchases (and generally, online prices are better than in-store prices), although your Plum Rewards membership you will get an extra 5% off books bought online. If you sign up and complete your online profile you'll get a bonus 500 points. Here's how the redemption levels break down:

• 2,500 Points = $5
• 4,5000 Points = $10
• 8,5000 Points = $20
• 20,000 Points = $50
• 35,000 Points = $100

Chapters also says they'll have "plenty of bonus offers throughout the year" so you'll be able to snag some extra points that way.

If you're a Chapters shopper, it certainly can't hurt to grab a free membership. Even if you're not an in-store shopper, you'll be able to get an extra 5% off your online purchases.
