hope this helps
You'll need to transfer the warranty to your name first of all. Then start a warranty claim or RMA etc.
Dell Ownership transfer Link
http://www.dell.com/support/retail/us/e ... tifySystem
Put the previous owner as
Microsoft
11290 Cantu Galleano Ranch Road
Mira Loma, California 91752-1448
Then fill out your info as new owner, make sure you verify your warranty expirations date , after that call Dell Canada for warranty repair and they will ship you a box , for you to ship back the laptop for warranty repair. Last time I did it I had my laptop back in 3 days repaired
I called microsoftstore.ca to find this information, they said they don't know, and she have to call her superior to have this information.
WTF??? I spent 2 hours on phone, and anyone know how to deal with the warranty???
Worth investing $30 in this replacement Intel card, just to solve the problems caused by Dell's bad drivers; as a bonus, you get an upgrade to the faster 867 Mbps "ac" protocol, dual frequency bands (2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz), as well as two transmitting antennas and two receiving antennas (2x2) and the Intel brand.
Replacing the wifi card is just as simple as replacing the RAM module for this laptop (actually, the same back panel that needs to be removed to access the HD and RAM also allows access to the WIFI card; no seal needs to be broken in the process, therefore Dell's warranty should not be affected).
Similarly for the fact that the Microsoft store listed this as having gigabit ethernet when it only has 100mbs?
Thanks
The keys are not uniform... some rows of keys click where others are soft.
When I first received the laptop, the seam below the touchpad on the edge of the laptop was slightly popped open.
Now, a few keys don't work all the time. Notably, my #5 key works off and on.
With that said, I will ask for an exchange. I simply can't find another laptop in this price range.
Also upgraded RAM to 8 GB. Performance improvements were negligible but it does give breathing room for opening multiple programs. Here's the link: http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B006YG8 ... 1_4&sr=8-4 Bought it for $51.80 but unfortunately it's now gone up in price a bit. Still better than ordering directly from Dell ($126 for 8 GB, you having a laugh)
Sorry for the necro, but I want to put my thoughts out there.
Long story short, you just have to update everything... then after a week, it prompted me to reserve my copy of win10, then after 2 or 3 days it allowed me to download.... then after a day, it finished downloading.
In the end, MS sucks but win10 is not bad.
Now I'm experiencing wifi issues... and 3 of the keys are clicking... R F and V.
Thanks T
will be returning to sq1 store in next few days if anyone is interested
on win 8.1, no issues, just keeping the i5, 1080p version instead
Basically it was a driver issue, the driver for the inspiron (on the dell site) isn't supported by windows 10. You have to delete your network driver device manager -> networking adapter? -> uninstall dell network 1704 (I'm pretty sure the names the names are wrong, but I don't have the laptop with me to check). Then after you've uninstalled the driver, install this one http://downloads.dell.com/FOLDER0311534 ... .0_A00.EXE
Be sure to download the driver first before installing the old one.
The file says it is .201 , so why is the driver version .256???
Maybe I should get a range extender? I don't know how to swap the wifi card. ugh
In post #752 I did exactly the same as you and got exactly the same result.
BTW, earlier that day I went to the local Microsoft store where the guy fiddled with the machine a bit but in the end left the driver as-is, offering a like for like swap of my laptop for a new one. I didn't see the point in that.
With it still not working I was just minutes from hopping back in the car to go buy another card when OP Aviador posted a link to a Reddit thread where someone mentioned that version of the driver. If I hadn't seen his post I would have seen yours. That's what's great about this forum: someone finds a deal and supports it all the way through while others pitch in to help out. I really appreciate it - I would have been lost without the suggestions.
The only working solution I found was to install the older 64bit Windows 8.1 driver (Version 6.30.223.201) posted by Dell for the 1704 WIFI card for their Inspiron 5000 series here:
http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/ ... egoryId=NI
A large download, a lengthy install and a reboot later, I got my WIFI back. Range is not that great but I maxed out the download throughput of my 25mbps Bell FIBE with just one bar (out of three) showing on the WIFI icon. I can also confirm that Bluetooth also works with this older driver, even when used simultaneously with the WIFI (because someone on the other thread suggested disabling Bluetooth as a workaround for the 1704 WIFI card with the 7.35.295.0 driver).

I had no previous driver to roll back to so I downloaded the previous one, Broadcom 6.30.223.201 (2013-11-11) and I'm now typing this from my deck, which was impossible before.
Still early in the game but at least one step forward. . .
Thanks again for the post and all your help.
What's the easy way to update to Windows 10.
Kid free time is only a few hours away lol
I"m having the same WIFI issues also Matt. Attempted to update drivers however indicates all up to date.
I upgraded to Windows 10 immediately on setup.
My router - old Linksys WRT150N - is in the basement close to the back wall. When I sit one floor directly above it, there are occasional disconnects. When I sit three feet away from that out on the deck, there's no connection at all. This is a deal breaker.
Dell Wireless 1704 802.11b/g/n (2.4GHz)
Driver provider: Broadcom
Driver Date: 2015-07-30
Driver version: 7.35.295.0
Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher.
It just disconnected shortly after I unplugged so I could walk downstairs to see the model number of the router.
Windows Network Diagnostics consistently claims "A network cable is not properly plugged in or may be broken - Detected" plus "problem with wireless adapter or access point - Fixed"
I do not have this issue with 2 other much older laptops.
How much time should it take ? I've chat with them and they always tell me to wait.
similar to this deal, it goes in and out of stock, just gotta keep on checking back
