View allAny of you guys know if there is something as "night mode" - as in turning on white letters on the dark background??
There was a hack for it on Kobo [and it was working so-so]; just curious...
Happy yours work.
I also loved the fact Kobo - based on Linux - was highly hackable, but.... never even get to that point
Also I am not comparing GLO HD to any Paperwhites; just stating what my experience was like...
May be that's why this model - even technologically advanced - was discontinued..? Probability of getting two lemons out of two is pretty small.
And finally, even the cheap and outdated Kindle 4 is [for me] better, smoother and faster reading experience than KOBO GLO HD.. - minus night light... and that is why I am going with this Paperwhite..
I prefer the Kobo because I can upload my favourite fonts to it, like Bookman Old Style. You can also put on the Kindle-exclusive fonts on the Kobo.
Kobo is more customizable and Overdrive is an awesome feature. Kindle is more ready-to-go and works better with Amazon books.
The only hardware problem I've had with any of those Kobos was that the internal microSD card that contains the OS came loose from its slot inside the Aura HD when it was dropped, causing it to work erratically. I had to open the case to stick it back more securely in the slot.
Maybe it is just me, but I really tried to love Kobo.
Got Kobo GLO at an incredible price but it was nothing but a chain of pain... Slower than Molasses, with the big "blink" whenever you turn the page, rarely recognized by Calibre...
Returned it in store for another one after the week, but it was about the same minus Calibre recognition.. Very frustrating.
Ended selling it [for the original price...]
Got used Kindle 4 [it's very old model, w/no back light] off Craig list, used for $40 and couldn't be happier even if it is stripped of features compared to Paperwhite...
So here is your answer from my experience...
I'm surprised Kindle/Overdrive in Canada haven't just gotten along and made it work.

The library considers one digital copy to be checked out for the entire loan period. So for example if they purchased the rights to have 6 digital copies of the book, if you check out one for 3 weeks, they have one less copy to loan out until your loan period expires.
The book publishers are a little concerned that digital copies don't wear out like paper books, so they keep lobbying for libraries to be required to re-purchase digital copies every 20 loans to simulate the paper book business model.
Doesn't sound too demanding to go through the conversions though, right?
Does this mode work (native, not converted to any text format) with PDFs?
Any comments about scalability for PDFs?

^ This is what I know, but the issue of PDFs in landscape mode is still unsolved [landscape to take advantage of the wider side -- 1440x1080]. IDK why this is still a problem on ereaders. Same with full Internet browsing and playing videos [color doesn't really matter for some videos, particularly training/educational where what is displayed is just slides with audio].
It goes on sale every 3-4 months for $120 (mostly valentine & mothers day) not $100. $100 is mostly on the Prime day.

Once it's loaded additional credit applied to check out and it turn out to 94.99 + tax.
In any case Calibre is great e-book library management software, and it's free, so check it out whether or not you intend to strip DRM or convert your books to other formats.
I read mine in bed right before sleeping and have no problem. The backlight is highy adjustable. You can turn it way down (or even off , and use it like a paper book) and just use a table lamp with a low-wattege bulb, or even an amber bulb. I have this one in a small lamp on my headboard and use a very low light setting on the Kindle, and it's awesome:

Great e-reader. Kindle + Calibre to convert to mobi is all you need.
Do the Kobo e-ink readers still have the issue with the batteries failing after a few months?
