  14 gauge is slightly thicker than 16 gauge, which means a lower resistance per foot. The longer the run, the thicker the wire in order to maintain a negligible resistance.
  
  I wouldn't use 16 AWG for more than 20 feet or so.

- aww missed out on the 14awg, don't think 16 would be such a good idea since I'm going to be putting it through the wall, what's a good place to get speaker wire? I only need about 100ft of wire 12/14 awg or so, shipping kills the deal from monoprice...

- Not a bad price, although, our local Liquidation World was selling spools of these for $5 and then $1 when they were clearing out all that old Radioshack stuff. I have 2 spools at home, it is heavy duty, with a nice thick outer sheath! Great for running through walls, etc...
  
  Man, those were the days, they had spools of any type of wire you can think of. Some people were getting spools of RG6 coax, or Cat5e ethernet cable for $5 or less too!

- Thanks OP! It's too bad I couldn't get in on the 14 guage stuff, but I will find uses for the 16 guage wire.
  
  And to put in my 2¢ rgarding the length of runs, I have run 50 feet of 16 guage without noticing any loss of sound. Sure 14 would be better- especially seeing as you are likely going to burry this behind drywall. But for a lot of the applications I have in mind (garage speakers, and ceiling speakers) this will do just fine.

- I find the sheathing with the 14ga makes it pretty thick, great for running through walls, and the wire itself is quite substantial, but for most uses, the 16ga would be fine too, although, it's OOS now too I understand.
