Free Google Maps Navigation GPS Software for Android Phones, Now in Canada

Android Google Maps GPS, Now in Canada
This deal has expired! This deal has expired!
The Google Maps Navigation Beta is now available in the Canadian Android Market after being initially released a few months ago internationally. In essence, it's free GPS software that turns your Android-based phone into its own Internet-connected GPS complete with turn-by-turn directions, voice search, traffic, streetview, and much more. You will need a data plan with your phone to be able to take advantage of these features but you can't beat free GPS software!

It's actually included in the Google Maps application so just search for 'Google Maps' in the Android Market.

    • Now I just need Google Voice to come to Canada.
Calgary 403 still works with US GV, forward it to a SIP account on your cell and it works. Call Canada and US across the nation, no roaming, since data is Canada-wide.

I'd like to see GN on BB, very few good TTS GPS apps except maybe Garmin and TeleNav which aren't free.

    • Great.

Does Apple block this functionality on the iPhone (like Google Voice)? They don't tend to like it when their customers get something for free that they could have been charged for.

Probably pretty hard for them to block this though - unlike GV this is part of an existing app, rather then a separate app.

Google Navigation ONLY works on Android. There's no app for the iphone.

Although GN only works on >= Android 1.6, GV can be found on Cydia/iPhone, and it takes as long as 3 months to get a GV invite...access the initial invite with hotspotshield, thereafter the GV account is established and shows up as part of your gmail login, no hss bypass required. Area code 403 has been working since at least when I started mine last fall.

    • I have used this couple of times and I don't have data!
If you select ur destination while still connected to a wifi (in front of ur house) it will load the map to ur destination and will guide u with turn by turn directions! but be careful if u take the wrong street it won't be able to recalculated unless u get back on its original path ...

How does it compare to the route that Google Maps on your web browser gives you?

    • Try igo for Android. Runs reasonabley well. It's a stripped down version of regular igo. It has lousy poi, but the routing seems ok.

    • I thought Navigation was already available on Android phones. I've had it on every single Android phone I owned

    • Im pretty sure you also need a data plan in order to use the GPS system, so not altogether "free". Same idea as the iphone though.
