Staples: Roku 2 XD Streaming Media Player is $69.92 + Free Shipping

Roku Media Player $20 Off
This deal has expired! This deal has expired!

If you're looking to beef up your television options, you might want to check out the Roku 2 XD Streaming Player -- it's currently $69.92 at Staples. The list price is $89.99 and that's about what it's selling for on Amazon.ca, London Drugs and Walmart.

If you're not familiar with the Roku, it's a media player with more than 100 channels of content (including things like Crackle, which has hundreds of free movies on demand, rdio, and other games/apps). If you have a Netflix subscription, you can use the Roku to watch Netflix on your TV (this is a plus for people who don't have a TV with an HDMI port -- the Roku uses the classic yellow/red/white A/V cables to connect instead). It has built-in wireless (but no ethernet port) and a MicroSD memory slot for additional storage capacity. The Roku comes with:

  • Roku Player
  • Remote Control
  • 2 AAA Batteries for Remote
  • Power Adaptor
  • A/V Cables

It's available in-store and online while supplies last. Shipping is free.

    • I have this, and it Only runs plex via the installed PlexMediaServer on your PC (this can be quite buggy)----otherwise contains the usual netflix, and a bunch of apps that no one watches----canadian roku has very little in comparison to the americans with their hulu.

The plex plugins are very good for canadians, a couple of their developers are canadian----they have much more canadian content than xbmc does---almost every .ca channel is archived on plex.

But, it isn't close to xbmc....no live content, and no US networks.

(that Staples photo definitely is not the canadian $89 Roku2)

    • Amazon.ca have both the Roku 2 XD and XS priced at MSRP of $90 and $110 respectively

How manu channels do us Canadian have so far?

    • Lack of YouTube is a deal killer for me. Otherwise - this is the best price I have seen for Roku units in Canada.

    • I recently picked up a Roku2 XD from Staples when they had the $25 off $75 coupon and can confirm that it is the newer model. Looks like they just haven't updated the picture. Even though it's a Canadian Roku, I was able to get the US firmware by setting up an account while on my DNS account. Main difference is access to extra channels like Pandora, Hulu Plus, Amazon VOD, Vudu, etc.

Is the Canadian one exactly the same as the US in that the all the content is there but not accessible from Canada or is the menu actually stripped down? I'm only considering this in combination with a DNS service to allow HULU, US Netflix, etc. Right now I've got a HTPC running XBMC but can't find a good way to play Netflix (or at least a good way that my wife will be able to work with)...this seems like a good option.

      Good to know! Thanks!

I believe there is a YouTube app. Put it's unofficial and not very practical.

    • Seems like this and unblock-us for $5/month would be a good combination, no?

Note: this XD unit does not have an ethernet port - just wifi. The Roku XS has ethernet, plus it also plays games. It's $20 off at Staples as well... LINK

    • Roku XS is the only way to go for me since the other ROKU don't have an ethernet port witch is essential to have the perfect streaming experience.

Didn't catch that....got my XD and XS models confused. I'm sure it would be fine for streaming SD content but I want to stream HD...

    • I had a roku soundbridge years ago, it was mostly alright but was buggy and there was like NO support from Roku in terms of fixes etc. Power supply provided died (happened to lots of people) eventually it just stopped turning on altogether even with another new power supply.

Anyway no more Roku for me.

    • Any thoughts on if the Staples coupons are just for specific regions? I'm in Toronto. I always only get the $10 off $100 coupon and the $20 off $200 coupon. Thanks!

    • We have a couple of Apple TV2s an ATV3 and a Roku XS. I like the ATVs, especially the JB option for the ATV2s, but my wife much prefers the simplicity of the Roku interface using Netflix, Hulu Plus and Plex. If we didn't have too many streaming boxes already we would probably get another XS.

    • I had problems with Roku. It doesn't play some MKV formats.. also few movies plays without audio. If I buy a media player, it should play everything!!!

      Roku failed me.

Funny part is my Samsung Smart TV plays pretty much all the formats.

Roku doesn't support Airplay as well... so you can't view your iPhone photos and videos through it.

I had Roku 2 XS Streaming Player.

Wifi is okay for some things but IMHO, streaming movies at decent quality isn't one of them. Ethernet is the best way to go.
