get this dealJanuary 18 Update: The price has gone up $12, but it's still a pretty good deal in our books!
And it's back! Right now, Newegg has restocked the refurbished ASUS Nexus 7 16GB Tablets and has put them back at the $177.99 now $189.99 price point. The last time these went on sale, stock moved very quickly. If you're interested, or missed out on the last go around, now's your chance to pick one up!
Despite being refurbished, it's still a very good price for the tablet. Ordering a brand new one from Google will start you off at $209 and a little extra for shipping. With taxes and shipping (which is free!) you can get one for just about $200.
If you're on the fence about it, it does come with a limited 90 day warranty.
The deal is live now and shipping is free. Don't forget to check out using the green links above to earn Cash Back on your purchase via RedFlagDeals.com. Thanks to vpower for spotting this.

Sound quality is above what I had expected. Seems to be a good range with a bit of lows. Noticeable mids and not too tinny/cheap sounding. Skip fwd/bk, play/pause and vol up and down all work perfect for music playback on my galaxyS2 and A500. Found DoubleTwist to be the best player, YMMV. I had it installed as I have Alarm which uses random MP3s for sound via DoubleTwist... kinda forced into using it TBH. Winamp didn't want to play nice, none of the buttons on the headset worked, sync issues, too much to deal with. One flaw is if you look from side profile - skip left is the next song and skip right is the previous song. This seems backwards to me but is easy enough to deal with.
It charges via a modified mini-USB you can see in the photo. I don't know the name of it, but the charge cable is quite short. 2-3 feet. I bought a screenless 16MB pen cam in 1998 which uses the same cable if that helps any. I have them on heading to and from work, about 45 min every day and it holds charge for at least 1 week/7 days. It'll chirp in your ear when it starts dying, and get more frequent until it turns off. I seem to notice these chirps with about 15 min battery life left. Charges in like 3 hr. I have a huge head, and large ears these 'wrap' above to stay put. I find them quite comfortable compared to the solid in-ear variants. I actually bought these, but they are T909S and preform the same just an extra $7, they came in retail packaging which may be a difference.. http://dx.com/p/top-notch-bluetooth-ste ... 200&u=9681. I see dx has 910A now. not sure of improvements but they are 1 cent cheaper.
Visually the unit seems to be in perfect condition - no blemishes, scratches, etc. It also seems to be operating fine - it shipped with Android 4.2 but immediately found the 4.2.1 update when it got Internet access. The UI is quite responsive and snappy and doesn't appear to be sluggish or laggy at all.
I already have an iPad 3 but do appreciate the smaller form factor and less weight of the Nexus 7. The screen is quite sharp but as noted in other reviews, colors are slightly muted - certainly compared to my Galaxy S2 AMOLED screen.
Overall, I think this was a fantastic deal for $177. After so many years of iOS, Android Jelly Bean is a nice change of experience. And having built-in GPS is a nice value-add when compared to some of the Garmin or TomTom products for around the same price.
Got my 32GB N7 couple of weeks ago. Performance is very snappy. Even when used tethered to my phone webpages come up fast. Screen is nice, good viewing angles.
$200 taxes in is a good price if you don't mind the refurbished risk. I may consider it if this is from local shop but no thanks for Newegg.ca.
Ainol's AMLogic has released "most of" their source code so Cyanomodgen is available for them. At least for the dual core ones. If you want to "future proof" your tablet, those will be the one to go for right now. I said "most of", because they left some bits out, so you don't get full graphics acceleration ie no Netflix.
AliExpress is probably the cheapest place to get those chinese tablets right now.. they also have sales over weekend. Just remember China is going to shut down for CNY in a few weeks, so if you want your items soon.. make the order ASAP. For Chinese tablets visit slatedroid.com and read the articles etc. It will be very obvious which ones to avoid. Also remember Chinese tablets comes with all sorts of preinstalled junky software that you need to clean.. extra PITA for those who are not familiar with the intricacies of Android.
Nexus 7's closest equivalent (same screen resolution etc) is the Ainol Fire/ Flame which runs for about $150 (with ship).. so you don't really save very much (you gain a rear camera; useful if you do QR / barcode as front camera doesn't work with those). Upside for Nexus 7 is you are pretty much guarantee Google will keep updating the OS and the QA of the tablet is solid. Basically the labour cost on the tablets are about the same, the price differential really comes down to the SoC and parts like touch screen drivers and batteries.
Nexus 7 Advantage: if you want it to just work out of the box (tinkering optional)
Chinese tablet Advantage: Cheaper. If you like to tinker eg rooting etc. before it works right.
though, if you are considering things under $100.... then
for the RK3066 CPU (which I hear some people say is a tad better than the Armlogics used by the infamous Ainols?)
But pandawill has it for a tad bit cheaper.
or for Arm A9 (though the resolution on this one is lower)
Of course, with China tablets the risk of needing to tinker and troubleshoot yourself is always present. Buyer beware!
You can find used 32GB's for around 220-240 too.
