If you've been considering a DSLR camera for a while but you're not eager to spend $500 to get your feet wet, Newegg.ca has a good offer for you. Right now, you can get a Refurbished PENTAX K2000 Black 10.2 MP 2.7" 230K LCD Digital SLR Camera w/smc PENTAX-DA L 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL Lens for $299.99 with free shipping.

Let's get the obvious out of the way -- it's refurbished and it's an older camera (circa 2009). With that said, the camera offers good image quality, fast operation and shutter speed, in-camera image stabilization, and is compatible with older lenses.. Check out what some reviews have to say:

    • Excellent camera for the money. Learn how to use a DSLR with this baby, uses all older K mount pentax lenses (a plus for those of us who have a LOT of autofocus lenses from an older Pentax 35mm SLR), and it uses AA batteries.. My wife has this one, and prefers it over her point and shoot. Just a word of caution to keep your finger above the flash when opening it, and ease it up. Have had to send ours back cuz when you push the flash up button, it is a spring release, and actually snapped the wire going to the flash.

Just wish there was an inexpensive underwater housing for this baby...

    • AA batteries?

Am I right in thinking you'll need an entire separate backback to haul batteries around?

Going on the Amazon reviews at least, battery life is purported to be good. No one seems to complain.

The recommended Lithium Ion AA's work for about 1000 photos as promised. For me, I have been taking 1000 photos a month, so after 2 sets of $11 batteries, I bought rechargeable NiMH, which work equally well - so far they last as long as the Lithiums.

No. It means you are not locked into one companies proprietary battery type/size and charging system. AA batteries and chargers are universal.

    • I believe this is the same as the Pentax Km that I bought brand new at Blacks 2 years ago for the exact same price. I was lucky enough to visit a store clearing out its final unit. I've since picked up a more feature-loaded Sony Alpha, thanks to RFD, but the Pentax feels the more intuitive to use.

The AAs are a plus for me. I have a nice SLR-like Canon that I no longer use thanks to its expired proprietary battery (expensive to replace). I should have no such problem with my Pentax. It loves Eneloops, which also work great in my mounted flash unit, so if I have my flash with me I also have a ready set of spare batteries.

    • The camera is pretty good. Don't expect to be taking a lot of flashless pictures with the kit lens indoors though, it needs a lot of light...
Otherwise it's really a very nice entry level DSLR. Picture quality is great as well.

Use Eneloops. I've had a couple of sets that I've been using since 2008 with the camera, they still hold a very decent charge.
