Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Virus, Spyware, Malware Protection

Free Microsoft Security Essentials
This deal has expired! This deal has expired!
Microsoft is throwing it's hat into the ring of free anitvirus packages and spyware detectors with Microsoft Security Essentials. It's a new, and free security package that includes virus, spyware, and malware protection all in one for Windows PC users. The early reviews are quite positive with Ars Technica being very impressed with the lightweight and unobtrusive installation:

"It should be noted that MSE is very small; the installer sizes range from just over 4MB to under 9MB. The installation is also very quick and the program's folder takes up only about 13MB. MSE sports a single tray icon (hidden by default in Windows 7) that indicates it is running. The software doesn't add any browser toolbars, desktop gadgets, or additional bloatware during installation."

Free and lightweight? Sounds like it's worth a try.

    • I just received two copies of Kaspersky antivirus suite. Should I return them and get this? Is this any good?

      Keep it.
You already paid for it. Unless you paid full price, yes, return it.
Keep in mind, MSE is only AV and spyware.
KAS is full AV, spyware, firewall and many more.

    • This is great. Replaced my Symantec AV, and it seems to be more in depth at finding potential threats.

Best of all, it's also Win 7 friendly when the time comes.

    • been using it for the past few days, and its been working great, though it never updates itself. I don't think I changed any settings. I always have to manually update it.

      Anyone else experience this?

There is probably nothing to update because you got all the latest updates.

Thry usually update it at least once per day. Also when I manually update it, there are new definitions. Yesturday I updated around 10 pm and it showed that I got definitions from 10am.

It should have been able to download those updates within those 12 hours.

    • Throwing it onto my Vista 64 laptop, KAV2009 thrashed my laptop drive too much. Curious to know how it'll stack up against the current heavy hitters (ESET, Kaspersky, Avira) in terms of detection, heuristics, and performance.
