    • quick question about the warranty... the difference between base warranty and next business warranty is a technician can be sent to your location. Does this mean if there is a problem I don't have to bother with shipping it to lenovo, the technician can just take care of it? is the ~30$ price difference between the two types of warranties worth it?

    • May I assume that a machine like this could send out one video signal via HDMI and display something completely different on the laptop screen?

    • Just an FYI, this laptop is ONLY available in Canada with a Canadian-Bilingual keyboard. This may be irrelevant to most people, but as someone who uses the "|\" button quite a bit, and who had trouble getting used to some of the compressed keys, it was a dealbreaker, and I had to return my Y580 (after a huge hassle with Lenovo).

    • Just to reiterate what other people are saying, the shipping is in fact very slow. I got the $850 one a month ago and it took a month to deliver. They said it along with a batch of laptops got stuck in customs when I talked to them.

    • I'm more concerned with over-heating issues on the Y580, which is why I haven't pulled the trigger yet. Specs are fantastic, but if it gets too hot it will throttle, and will probably malfunction. The extended warranty is very well priced, but haven't heard the best things about Lenovo service (the long shipping delay being a good example).

Anyone who bought in the first round, can you comment on temps under gaming?

    • not a bad price... but I worry about the screen quality... and Sony S 1080p IPS and 2kg seem more attractive to me... but i guess this laptop is good for gaming

    • I'd be very, very wary of lenovo's shipping, i ordered the original deal for this when it was first posted w/ the 750 GB drive, back in mid june, it still hasn't shipped, and they won't let me cancel because it's "in production" it's been in production for 3+ weeks now and missed 4 ship dates.

    • I ordered the Y580 1T 32 g SSD on July 9th; I received confirmation that the order was shipped on the 15th. On the 16th I called to verify the keyboard and to make sure if it was the bilingual keyboard, that it would be changed to the English. I was told that it was the English keyboard. My order arrived on the 23rd of July. I opened it to find that I received the bilingual keyboard. I contacted 866-96-THINK (really?) waited on hold for 30 minutes and was told by Richard (the person I spoke with the last time and a very pleasant) that the Y580 does not come configured with the English keyboard in Canada at all.

If this were the case, why was I given false information (by sales apparently)? If this info was available, I would not have ordered the laptop or cancelled the order when I spoke with the reps. I would have purchased from Dell (ugh) or Asus. I need the laptop for business and this messes the timing for me on projects requiring new hardware. Also, if Americans can get English keyboards, why can't Canadians?

I spoke with a supervisor (Amid Frass?) and requested a return/refund. They will need to review, send me an email with an approval and then send a packing labels to have the laptop returned. Supposedly, this will take 2 days. Pain in the ***** . I informed them that this completely sours my first purchase from Lenovo and it makes it highly unlikely that I will do so again.

Note: One problem with offshore call centres is that it is difficult to understand what they are saying. The volume quality on the phones, while the English is excellent and people polite, the accents are make it difficult to hear and understand what is being said. So I miss parts of the conversation.

Wasn't it some law that was enacted to standardize it cause the french-canadians were complaining or something like that? The reason being that canada is a "multicultural society" so it needs to cater to everyone. That's why it's also law that all packaging in supermarkets need to have english and french on them.

Or at least that's what I heard when I asked a friend about it.

I personally am not used to the french keyboard, wish they would allow an option for us to choose from!

    • Funny story, bought one of these (1080p, 500GB HDD, BR model) when it first came out. GPU was messed, sent it in for repair. The repair parts were on backorder, complained that I needed it for college right away. They send me a brand new one instead. Everything's cool.... few weeks ago they send me back the repaired one as well. LOL

Call them up and tell them, otherwise it's fraud. Besides, they will figure it out eventually anyway.
