I think the days of downgrade options are mostly behind us now from made to order manufacturers. Also, I believe Blu-ray is now just standard across the board on any models offering 1080p.

How is the build quality of the Y series?

I know many people who wouldn't touch a Lenovo unless it's T, X, or W series. I know it won't be built to the same standards (and price), but how does it compare with other consumer level laptops?

    • Links down? Is it also safe to presume that these laptops still come with a bilingual keyboard?
  • AVATAR
    • watungga
    • No not safe!!

Keyboard is definitely vandalized with French characters.......

..... also they have 30days to do that vandalism before they ship it to your door...

    • barebones would be nice instead (no windows/HD/cddrive) -- would drive down the price (and ramp up sales?).

my guess is that the type of person who would buy this laptop ..would/should already have the needed extra parts.

perhaps an experimental barebones (priced around $250 less) exclusive for rdf would be interesting, if not just to see the sales would be like ...i'd insta buy it at ~$600.

Expect more of that, 17" notebooks are going away.

    • Is the best bang for buck laptop out there at the moment, in terms of raw performance and features?
(Assuming I don't care about the branding, keyboard layout, size)

I agree with you. The Windows license adds quite the premium to cost of the laptop. Some people have their own OS preferences or may have spare OS licenses already.

Secondly, I am the type of person to replace the stock HDD, RAM and (possibly CD drive with another HDD) since we can always find great deals here on RFD.

I'm sure if they excluded these extras, a computer savvy person would be able to build a better machine at the same price. Granted, this is not for everyone so it's understandable why they wouldn't have that option for us.

Agreed, but we'll see better on Black Friday. i7-3630QM notebooks may go for sub-$700.

On a cold day, this deal would keep me warm, but I wouldn't shed layers.

Well this is a gaming laptop, the only comparable laptops ones are the MSI ones as well the asus ones (within this price range) This one comes on top. I doubt the asus rog laptops will end up being <700. Same with MSI. This laptop might drop in price, but I still kinda doubt it.

You could get a laptop with the i7 for <700 but I HIGHLY doubt it will have the Nvidia 660M

I can get an i7-3610QM with that configuration (that card) for around ~700 shipped (less tax) right now, albeit manufacturer refurbed.

We've already seen reasonably built Asus i7-3610QM lappies with 8GB of RAM and 750GB - 1TB HDD at $560. Recall the Best Buy Labour Week sale.

      Really? If i7-3610QM with 8GB of RAM and 750GB - 1TB HDD at $560, that's very nice...

    • Ironically, the reviews weren't that hot. I think they were mainly nitpicks complaints when it was priced much higher. Swap out the HDD for an SSD and the Asus Labour Day deal was a monster performer.

Same worries, will pull the trigger on or just after Black Friday.

    • Glad you folks are coming around, there's a lot of churn on this board and collective memories are short.

      Best times to buy:
      1) Labour Day/Black Friday
      2) Boxing Week
