Henry's: Olympus 12.3 MP Camera $249.99
This deal has expired! This deal has expired!

Forum user eladmk spotted a decent online deal at Henry's for shutterbugs who want an affordable and more travel-friendly alternative to a DSLR! For a limited time, the Olympus E-PL1 12.3 MP Camera (Gold) with 14-42mm lens is on sale for $249.99 (online only). This light-weight, interchangeable-lens camera is a good starter kit for any aspiring photographer who is in the search of a powerful camera with DSLR benefits but without the heaviness and the hefty price tag.

As a third generation of the Olympus PEN series, the E-PL1 is equipped with the same features as its more-expensive predecessors: 12.3 megapixel, high speed live MOS sensor, built-in image stabilization, full manual control, 720p HD video, art filters and automated focus and exposure modes. And, it offers what the previous models (E-P1 & E-P2) lack: a built-in pop-up flash, a direct HD video control on the back of the camera and a new Live Guide interface with enhanced auto modes that further simplifies photography for beginners.

To learn more, visit Henrys.com. The E-PL1 is currently in stock but we're not sure how many quantities are left or when it will return to its regular price of $499.98, so if you're interested, you'll want to put your order in! There's free shipping if you place your order by April 10.

    • Those are nice, I have the e-pl2 and that lens and a 20mm panny.
Can also put Nikon and Canon lenses on the body with adaptors.

      I got a 5D recently
and am going to sell my Olympus setup , if anyone is looking,
but it sure was nice, in many ways better than a dSLR.

    • Thanked. It will be my first non P&S camera. Hopefully it's a worthy upgrade. From the images, the Gold is not really that prominent, more like silver. Not sure how the real thing will look like.

    • Just couldn't resist at this price. Wow, way cheaper than what I paid for my Canon S90 and this one takes way better pictures. Now I have to decide what camera to bring with me:

      1. Important events - Nikon D7000
      2. Places with water - Panasonic TS3
      3. Casual picture taking - Small p & s camera with decent image quality - Canon S90
      Hmm
      4. Want best quality pics especially indoor but don't want to lug the Slr- Olympus E-PL1 !

      Thanks op!

      depends on what you do

if you like landscape, olympus 12mm 2.0 is fabulous and will run you for 800+
20mm 1.7 is great lens but auto focus is a little slow now compared to new lenses that come out, it is an all around lens
if you like all around nifty 50, Panasonic Leica 25mm 1.4 will run you 600ish
portrait lens, olympus 45mm 1.8 is excellent. 400+tax

I think part of the fun of micro 4/3 is that so many old manual lenses can be adapted to it with simple cheap adapters. I'm guessing most m4/3 buyers wouldn't be interested in this but read up on it, maybe you will be. Most of my old ones are Contax C/Y mount Zeiss lenses, they're very common for adapting to modern bodies and are widely available online, well they were a few years back but I assume they still are even though I haven't looked in ages.

I have the old GH1, though to be honest most of the old lenses I've played with were on my Canon bodies. Anyway, maybe it's stupid of me to suggest this but personally I think it's cool and it's kind of like a sub-hobby of its own.

    • That FUJI FINEPIX REAL 3D W3 camera is also really interesting, since it captures 720p 3D video and plays back a preview on the LCD in 3D without glasses! Too bad about it being open box... although I might still bite. What do you guys think?

    • the black one is $50 more:

      Black E-PL1

I'm going to wait for an insane price for the E-PL3...the E-P2 is $350 off at $499.99 and you can either the 17mm or 14-42mm:

      E-P2 with 17mm

      E-P2 with 14-42mm

I'm not sure with the difference between all these Olympus cameras so not sure if the E-P2 is a good deal

    • The camera is still much larger than a S90 or S95, maybe with the new Pana pancake like kit lens, it would be small enough for the pocket?

    • 1. If I did not have GF2 I would jump on this E-PL1 , both capable with any vintage manual lens, my MD50mmF1.7 on GF2 is stunning on video and great (not perfect) on portrait. GF2 has 1080 video but EPL1 has sensor shift stablization but only 720P on video.
      2. Fuji3D at this price is great 3D camera perfect on 3D picture but ok on 720P video. Fuji quality control is not that great on this type of camera - watch out dead/hot pixel though.

If you wanted to create a 3D video your better off making a 3D camera rig consisting 2 720p cameras (identical is better).

Google this camera. I thought about buying one last week, but it has pretty dismal reviews.

    • Thanks!

I had Futureshop price match it plus they took another $10 off.

It's strange, the box (all boxes) show the silver/gold on the cover, but the camera is black inside.

I don't know if I should keep this or just wait for the E-PL2 to go on sale. I doubt it will be this cheap any time soon though

Yup, this is a big benefit of the M4/3 line. I have some very good Minolta lenses (28mm, 50mm f1.4, 70-200 zoom) and they give amazing images with an M4/3 body. (I use the Panasonic GF1.)

The big advantage of using M4/3 with these lenses is that the adaptors will let you focus to infinity. If you try to use these with a Canon or other DSLR they won't focus over the whole range due to the thickness of the DSLR body. I've tried the adaptors with built-in corrective lenses but they give chromatic aberrations and fuzzy pics. My GF1 pics with manual lenses are razor sharp.

    • Have been using a while. For the price it's hard to beat. Better IQ than any other more expensive P&S (just except G1X). Just don't expect DSLR AF speed and control.
