Future Shop

Future Shop: Dell 15.6" Intel Core i7-2670M Laptop w/500GB HD, 8GB RAM, GeForce 525M $629.99

Future Shop: Dell 15.6
This deal has expired! This deal has expired!

If you're in the market for a new laptop, preferably one that can play games on low to medium settings, Future Shop has a pretty decent deal on a Dell laptop you might want to consider. Right now, you can pick up the Dell 15.6" Intel Core i7-2670M notebook with 500GB hard drive, 8GB RAM and dedicated GeForce 525M for $629.99. This is definitely a solid price for a laptop with these specs and should work well as a desktop replacement or for students living on residence.

This laptop features a second-generation quad-core i7 processor, decent hard drive space and pretty sizable RAM. That alone for under $650 is a good deal but throw in the 1GB dedicated GeForce 525M, a couple of USB 3.0 ports, HDMI out and a webcam and we're venturing into warm to hot deal territory. We don't expect it to play games on medium to high settings, but this should be fine if you're content playing on low to medium settings. At 5.5 pounds and moderate battery life, we wouldn't recommend this for commuters but, if you can look past those shortcomings, there's no denying this is a laptop with some power.

The deal is available online and in-store and free shipping is available on orders over $20.

Much thanks to grimzkunk for pointing this deal out!

    • I don't understand this

"Due to the legal restrictions of the Quebec French Language Charter, this product cannot be delivered in Quebec. We apologize for any inconvenience."

usually it says this when it only has an English keyboard yet it says "Keyboard Language: Bilingual"

Maybe it's because they don't have French documentation? That is kind of weird.

    • At the same price i'm also considering this : http://www.canadacomputers.com/produ...source=message

Spec are similar, screen is 14" but build quality seem better. Yet I would appreciate any comment from someone who own one of those two laptops.
      Well for starters, you're comparing a quad-core versus a dual-core.

You are absolutely right. Just saw that this i7 is 4core 8thread with hyperthreading. You got a point, the little acer is not comparable in term of performance.

Spec and comparison for this i7 can also be found here : http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_i...i7-2670QM.html

    • low res screen (1366 x 768), slow hd (5400rpm), small-ish battery (48Whr) Considering the price, this is a good package, but you might want more sooner than you like.

Not for student playing Sims3 twice a week.
Maybe 120gb SSD upgrade in 2 years because I know how HDD degrade in term of performance over years, and I know how fast SSD are.

This res is OK for mainly youtube/facebook/office2010
5400rpm is ok for the first two years
battery is ok if the i7 underclock well and i'm pretty sure it does

battery could also become a problem if discrete gpu doesnt use Nvidia Optimus well...

    • I would actually even consider the deal to be better then warm - at least mildly hot. This config with the i7 2670QM is actually getting at least closer to cost plus a "normal" wholesale margin given that even in 1000 unit batches Dell is paying somewhere about$225 per unit for this chip. The 525M video chip is on its way out (this is likely end of run stock), but at least it is discrete graphics . One has 8gb of ddr3 1333Mhz ram married with a processor that can actually take advantage of it. Also 2 USB 3.0 ports plus an expresscard slot and esata.

The i7-2670 is much more umphh then say a 2620 series which you usually see floated out for i7 deals in this price range.

I don't need it, but these specs at this price in my mind makes this a good buy. It is kind of odd to see a good quality processor married to a class 3 discrete vid card, but that is how they arrived at the price. To me, given how much I have been bitching on the forum lately about the fact manufacturers have been robbing everyone charging $700 and more for i3-i5 with the built in intel vid, this unit just reinforces the contention that 90% of laptops are significantly overpriced right now.

The low price makes it worthwhile to consider a faster HD down the road and still not have broken the bank.

Now I don't have much experience with Dell, and I know they have lots of detractors due to build quality in the past. But I think this price has the potential to overcome build quality, unless they are really bad currently.

And pllleeeasse fanboys give the screen res a rest. Almost everyone I know cannot use a 15" screen at 1080p res - they end up setting the type at 24 pnts to be able to see the screen LoL And still suffering from eyestrain. Even on my 18.4" 1080p most of my friends complain about the small typefaces.

The res is fine. Hook it up to a big screen, and drive that at the higher res via the hdmi outand one will be dancing on the table.

    • I'm probably gonna buy it and give it a 14days trial since FS will refund openbox before 14 days.
My concern are about the build quality. I know it's not Business quality, but there is a minimum build quality even for home user.

I bit the bullet and did the same.

For reference, this was $900 yesterday:

    • For computer price reference I usually check dell.ca -- some computer models are always on sale every week, and since it is a just-in-time build-to-specs operation, I consider their "sale price" as regular market price.

From http://www.dell.com/ca/p/inspiron-15...iron-15r-n5110 I see an equivalent model (with 1TB instead of 500GB hard drive, both 5400 rpm) for $750. From canadacomputers.com I found a 1TB 5400 rpm drive for $150 and 500GB for $90 (both WD Scorpio Blue). So this FS model is about $60 off from "regular sale price". It seems pretty hot to me at first glance, but now it looks warmish.

    • My wife got a 17" version of it from futureshop a few weeks ago for $750 I think. I think the spec is similar to this one with the exception of bigger screen (higher resolution). It is not even close to the performance of my i7-960 desktop. I think the main bottleneck is the 5400rpm hard drive. We returned it.

p/s We bought inspiron 14z for $625 + tax instead during the last round of dell deals. I know this is a wrong thread of it, but I just couldn't find that thread. For anyone who got that laptop, when I ordered the laptop, it says it has backlit keyboard, but it came without. Called to complain and was offered $100 money back or $150 credit for future purchase. I took the $100 money back.

    • Just picked this up....
      So far so good.

The sound is fairly good for a laptop. The keys & touchpad seem to be in a good position - is not awkward to use like some laptops. Laptop also has the two finger scroll (which I really like!) Lots of bloatware like expected - but does seem to be a lot (at least more than an Acer)

3.25 hours of Battery at 80% charge, average brightness.

Going to put this i7 and 1gb video card to the test later tonight.

The only problem I noticed is that on the bottom left corner of the laptop (tray) does not appear to be clipped in. I can push down on it and it makes a clicking noise. Anyone else experience this?

    • got the laptop today...

      pros:
      specs and price
i like the fact the power input, Ethernet port and a usb 3.0 port are on the back
speakers are good for a laptop

      cons:
      screen
keyboard (but probably because i'm not used to it)
touchpad (started acting up after an hour of use....hopefully just a one time thing)
      dell bloatware

    • I would have to say that I am more than likely pulling the trigger on this unit tomorrow.

You can not find a i7 with dedicated graphics and 8gb of ram for this price. Screen resolution does not bother me.

Also consider it was $899 before the sale started this is a good deal for the unit you are getting.
