If you just need a cellphone for occasional use, 7-Eleven convenience stores are running a promo where you can get a Nokia 1600 cellphone with the purchase of a $100 worth of airtime through their SpeakOut Wireless service (they use the Fido network). Calls are $0.20 per minute and text messages are $0.05 to send and receive in Canada. There is an extensive thread about the promo in the forums and one popular tip is to ask for the airtime vouchers in lower denominations because the expiration of the airtime is extended 365 days each time you add more money.

      yes u can.. but ull have to call customer service for them to transfer ur fido number to the 7-eleven sim

    • Does Petro-Canada offer the same deal? There are no 7-11's around here (Montreal, Qc), but there are plenty of Petro-Canada gas stations. Seems like a nice offer... sure as hell beats my Telus 30-day expiry, 25c/minute prepaid phone.

      Yes. Call customer service after you get your new phone. Remember, don't cancel the old one until you transfer the number.

    • lol, the special just started, and according to the 7-11 guy I got the last free 1600 at the vaughan (rutherford x keele) location. The others were 2610 and 6061 which are $75 off phone with purchase of $100 credit.

      an important thing to add that i just found out, if you make outgoing calls, if its pass 30secs and no one answers, you are still charged 1min for it, so if someone picks up 61 seconds into the call, you are already charged 2mins for it

      its in the TOS if you read it carefully where it says basically as soon as you hit SEND, the timer starts and if its past 30secs, its a chargeable minute even if no one picks up and you hang up at 45secs....

      now if someone calls you and you dont answer, thats okay, you wont be charged

      so that means you gotta make sure if no one picks up around the 25sec mark when you call someone, hang up and try again (that gives you like around 4 rings to the person before you hang up, maybe 3, i dunno, i didnt even pick up the phone yet myself till later today)

    • tip is to ask for 2x $50 voucher (since all vouchers for the 7-eleven speakout wireless service is valid for 365 days) and then activate the 2nd $50 voucher before the 90 day expiration (cause all cards are valid for activation upto 90days from purchase)

      this tip gives you 455 days (1 year 3 month) of airtime usage
      I got 4 x $25 cards when I got the plan in June & just now activated the last 3 cards (on the 88 day) ...so minutes will last almost 15 months vs. just 12

Saw a bunch of 1112s (free), a 6061 ($50), a few 1100s (free) and a few 2610s ($25). I bought a 1600, not sure if they had any others left. IMO, it's the best free phone available.

      For those interested, just got back from the Yonge and Eglinton location. They just got a couple dozen phones in stock. Saw a bunch of 1112s (free), a 6061 ($50), a few 1100s (free) and a few 2610s ($25). I bought a 1600, not sure if they had any others left. IMO, it's the best free phone available.
