Here's an interesting one -- Dell.ca has a TrendNet VOIP USB Phone Adapter for Skype for $14.99 with free shipping. This device, properly set up, will allow you to use your regular phone to make and receive calls through Skype (while maintaining normally land line functionality). It's very tempting at this price, and certainly cheaper than Skype phones.

The adapter needs to be connected to your computer, a telephone line, and a regular phone. Plugging it into the base of a cordless phone means all associated headsets will be able make and receive Skype calls, so that seems like a good solution.       This seems to be the best price I can find for this product.

      Just started to use Skype and I am interested in using the "TOLL BYPASS" feature.

      Anybody feedback on this product?

      The sale ends tommorow so may just pull the trigger anyway.

    • Latest driver from TrendNet is for Skype 3.2 (current version is 4.1). Also no Vista support. Trendnet themselves sell this for 30 US. So based on all that, I'm out.

      Just for the fact that I can answer Skype calls from anywhere in the house is good enough for me. All I have to do is connect the cordless phone base unit to the adapter and all my handsets now have dual line capabilities (answer and place calls on skype and the regular phone line).

      As I said, great deal for the price.

    • Just so you are clear on this. You will need to plug this into a computer and a telephone line and your regular phone to work.

      So, if you are considering this, you will need to have a computer on 24x7, with this plugged in, and a phone line nearby, hopefully the main phone line coming into your house so that all phones can use it. (alternatively, to a cordless phone base station)

      For an apartment, this may be alright, but if you have a house, you really have to consider where the computer, adapter and your main phone line come in.

      This is a "voice only" solution so having Skype 3.2 installed is not an issue. The later versions of Skype generally enhanced video and tweaked the user interface.

      Also, Skype 3.2 will run on Vista and on Windows 7 (both in native mode and XP compatibility mode). So I really don't see what the issues are.

    • Been using one of these for a couple of years just a different brand. I hooked it up to a cordless phone and works great. The only thing to watch out for as others have mentioned is the software compatibility. I am running win7 and there are issues with memory leaks and connections, but still use it for outbound calls. I dont leave it on all the time due to the issues with Vista/Win7 but still like the cordless/Skype outbound calling capablitity and one day they will fix the inbound issues I am sure. Well worth the money.

      Its OK, whenever you turn the PC on, you have your Skype ready to go, it wont take that long.

      Just checked... Toll Bypass capabilities are built into the included software.

      From what I understand, you dial your land line and the Tendnet Adapter picks up and asks for a password, then asks you to enter the number that you want to call and dials it via Skype (i.e. no long distance changes), and then connects you to that number via your land line. Great for cell phone usage. Every long distance call is a local call.

      Just an idea, but how about getting on the Telus $7/month cell plan at:

      and registering your land line as the unlimited local talk number. Then call that number every time you need to make a call (local or long distance). Even better, how about replacing your land line with a free phone from:

      paying the one-time $50 fee and using that number as your land line. Just some ideas...

      Nonetheless, I might just grab a second unit.

    • I had one delivered from Dell yesterday. I can tell you it doesn't work with version 3.8. I don't see myself going all the way back to 3.2. In fact the CD that ships with it is only compatible to version 2.6.

      I'm probably going to return it unless someone out there wants mine. I'm in Montreal.

      I bought one few months ago for about the same price, experimented with it and finally threw it in the 'Blue bin' for recycling after a week or so.

      The drivers and Skype support are outdated. It doesn't always work.

      No you don't need to plug in a regular phone line. But if you're not going to use that capability and you are going to be near a computer why not just buy a USB skype phone that you can plug directly into your computer.

      Type "Skype Phone" into the search on ebay.ca and you'll come up with lots of alternatives for cheaper that will probably work with the latest version of Skype.

      I use a Linksys 2 line cordless phone with integrated Skype. It removes the need for a computer on 24x7, by having a base station that plugs directly into your wired network.
