If you haven't settled on a media player or HTPC solution yet, a pretty compelling product is on the horizon. The Boxee Box Wireless HD Media Player (DSM-380) is now available for pre-order at BestBuy.ca and FutureShop.ca at a price of $199.99. It's a nice little win for Canada as Amazon.com's pre-order price is $199.99 US. The expected release date is November 21, 2010.

This media player has a lot going for it, starting with a unique design, a sleek remote control that has a QWERTY keyboard on the back, and wireless N built in. Feature wise, the Boxee is very proficient at managing a media library (it can do media scraping, grab fan art, TV/Movie information, among other things), supports tons of formats (most files without DRM), and handles 1080p. Boxee is also purportedly working with several Canadian content providers to provide content.

    • I've been keeping updated on the Boxee Box for a while now, but as it gets closer to release I wonder if it really makes sense to buy one in Canada.

      Yes, you can stream YouTube, go to Facebook, and access a fair number of online audio & video resources, but if you visit the Boxee site itself they promote a lot of features like Pandora, Netflix, Hulu, all of which will not (easily) work from here. I suppose it could be useful for a very casual user who wants to check the occasional media from their couch, but a Revo or similar small form factor PC will likely provide a lot more functionality for a marginally more expensive price tag.

    • Could this even work? I know you would not have access to US networks online because of geolockout in Canada. And last I checked they don't offer the plentiful Canadian channels online like CTV.ca etc. Everything else does basically what my ps3 can do like streaming movies using ps3 media player. Maybe better to wait for Netflix's canadian roll out to see what happens.

      I was originally thinking about purchasing one, but since we live in Canada, a lot of the box's functionality is missing. The fact that the remote uses RF instead of IR - means I can't use my harmony remote (and I'm not interested in buying a $400 RF compatible model), which is another big turnoff.

      Netflix is coming to Canada. Who knows what content they'll have.

      I'm interested in this if it can play 720p/1080p MKVs smoothly. It's cheaper than a revo and easier setup, but not as flexible (can't load XBMC on it).

    • i have been keeping track of the boxee box. I was really excited about it when it was first announced but i couldnt wait anymore and i bought a WD live just last month. Im happy with the unit but wondering if anyone has a comparison of the boxee box vs WD live? I think in the next little while we r gonna see alot more players in this space especially since apple relaunched their apple tv

      Its not a bad deal if you want a xbmc/boxee box.
      Comes with a cool remote for text entry which is nice

I cannot imagine Boxee would go to far in protecting itself (although they maybe selling the box at a loss) so hopefully it is a straight forward hack/install. This is an easy option for me if I can get XBMC on it. Should rock out 1080p and little/no setup.

      I like the library and features of XBMC (which Boxee is based on).

    • I'd sold myself on buying one of these over a year ago, now it's come down to the crunch I'm going to be getting a Revo. I can stick the same (great) software on, access the same content but at the end of the day I'm left with a PC as opposed to some possibly hardware crippled, non-upgradable legacy device, it just seems a smarter move to plump up the extra $100. (though I'll admit the remote is nice looking)

      Expensive? the only other thing thats cheaper that plays HD is popcorn/wdlive which has a terrible interface
      199 is decent imo.

    • I cant wait for this. Sure, you can use a WDTV Live (which I do now) but you have just a very simple UI. The beauty in this is having full UI for TV, Movies, etc that does its own media scraping and can literally play any video file. It was mentioned yesterday that it has been tested to play h264 1080p video up to 90mbps bitrate (way more than enough).

      Crippled? You realize this is not some crappy IR blaster based PVR?

      Edit: Loto Bak just barely beat me to it, and great points too. No other media player includes a remote or webkit based browser at this price.

      How about playing any video files you want? Not being limited to 720p 2.5mbps max that the A4 in the Apple TV can handle, or not being limited to what you have available in itunes? Apple TV is a joke anyway, regardless of the existence of Boxee Box

    • I'm also very interested in this product as its based on xbmc and can play mkv files. The reason I've stayed away from WD Live and Patriot Box Office is because of the horrid GUI, to me a good GUI is worth some $$. I know that the PBO can be skinned but I'd rather have native support. I know the boxee box recently dropped the Tegra 2 chip and went with the new intel CE4100 chip. Will wait to see some reviews before buying. The regular price is supposed to be $229 so the $199 can be considered a "deal".
