Best Buy

Best Buy: BlackBerry PlayBook 16GB $179.99, 32GB $229.99, 64GB $279.99 (Ends August 9)

Best Buy: BlackBerry PlayBook 16GB $179.99
This deal has expired! This deal has expired!

Those of you in the market for a tablet, companion for your BlackBerry smartphone or both will definitely want to check out this limited time deal at Best Buy. Right now, you can save an extra $20 on all BlackBerry PlayBook models bringing them down to $180, $230 and $280 for the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models respectively. While not a huge savings at $20 each, the PlayBook hasn't seen much of a price drop since it's new MSRP earlier this year.

While not as feature packed as the new iPad or an Android tablet, the PlayBook is an affordable device that works well for online streaming, as a high end e-reader or for watching movies on the go. If you're looking for apps, though, you might want to look elsewhere as the App World remains barren even now.

The deal is live now but expires on August 9. Free shipping is available on orders over $20.

    • This seems clearly related to the new Nexus 7 Tablet's popularity, but I wonder how many of these RIM actually made (and stockpiled)? Recently looked at the fall of the Playbook on my own blog here: http://blog.cwl.cc/2012/02/fall-and-fall-of-blackberry-playbook.html

      How low can it go?

    • I'm not getting this. Blackberry had 16,500 employees worldwide, now 5000 fired, and potentially another 3000 on the cutting block. BB has shut down their stores and flagship store. Their stock is in turmoil.

    • RIM is moving from it's current platform to an entirely new platform, QNX which runs Playbook. Obviously the people involved with the old platform are mostly not needed anymore so layoffs are natural. Yes, RIM is going through some turmoil but Playbook is part of RIM's future - and it's a fine tablet. I own a Playbook and an iPad, love them both but I actually use the Playbook more. For $180, this is a steal. Nexus 7 has more apps yes but Playbook has more memory for less, 2 cameras vs 1, HDMI out, better e-mail (IMO) and a better OS (IMO). I have used a Nexus 7 for many hours, it's good but I would still take a Playbook.

P.S. that's based on it's own merits and not "popularity" or stock price. RIM is not going anywhere and is financially very strong.

    • This is an outdated P.O.S. period.
If you are crazy enough to want one, go to your local kijiji. So many people are dying to get rid of theirs, and you can easily get one for $100 or less.

    • @ikeny - That is untrue. There are no fully functioning Playbooks on kijiji for under $100 and it's not an out dated OS - It's the same QNX OS that runs the majority of car systems. You have no clue what you are talking about.

    • .... Slower processor, inferior screen, lacking in apps, a dying company that has failed to deliver time and time again... I would stay away from these things. There is barely any room for a 3rd player in these tablet wars, but that third player is going to be Microsoft while BB slowly fades away.

If you want to spend $180 on something ethat will be gathering dust in two years then buy this. Otherwise wait or save more for an iPad or ICS/Jellybean Android tab. Anyone who says the playbook is better is obviously using iOS and Droid wrong.

    • @r22 - iPad cost 3X as much - never said it was better, I said I used it more because of it's size, it's ability to teather to my blackberry data plan for free. I used it at the cottage all last week. It can even do flash - still can't do that on my iPad??

    • I love my Playbook!! The QNX OS is very intuitive and the multitasking is great. It's over a year I have it, and it's the only device we use at home.

Don't listen to the obvious haters and their comments, their opinions are based on nothing but ignorance.

    • Playbook is a dinosaur, compared to current crop of tablets available in the stores ... spend the extra money and get yourself one the newer/better tablets by Asus, Samsung and Apple.

    • You're spending $180+tax. If that is pocket change to you, then why are you so cheap?

If you agree that it is a fair amount of money, then I highly suggest you wait and save the extra $80 to buy a much superior product in the nexus 7.

I'm not a apple fanboy, or a droid fanboy. I've been hooked on the crackberry until it fell so far behind, and am looking forward to what Windows8 can bring to the table. I'm a fan of tech and if you really want the best value for your dollar you should avoid these playbooks until they drop to the $100 pricepoint.

What does this have to do with getting a reasonably priced tablet that functions as stated in the OP? This is a nice tablet for a pretty good price. The specs are actually quite respectable for what's out there and it will be upgradeable to the BB10 software in the new year.

    • I had an Android tablet before the Playbook, first thing I did was I downloaded a task killer, the next thing I did was return it and got the Playbook. ;-)

The Playbook interface is exceptional and I never had to kill any app running in the background. Everyone looks at needing a "Quad-Core" "1.5 ghz cpu" etc..., Fact is the Playbook's hardware is spec'd for the device to run the OS at maximum capacity.. and it does.

@R22u - Can you provide any evidence that you have physically compared the Playbook to other tablets, probably not.
