View allI got one for christmas (upgrading from the kindle paperwhite) and it's been great. excellent performance, high-end screen, msd-card slot, insane battery life (I just recharged it for the first time since dec 25 and I read for hours each night), great features, etc. I don't know about the long-term lifespan as I've used it for ~2 months, but you can still buy 2 of these for the price of a single voyage.
Pricing between the Kindle and Kobo stores seems to be pretty similar, however I've found the titles I'm interested in tend to be slightly cheaper on the Kindle store. Although you are technically limited to the Kindle store for the Paperwhite, you can purchase ebooks from other sources and convert them to a Kindle supported format using software on OSX or Windows.
Personally, I ended up returning my Kobo and buying the Paperwhite. I use the Kindle App on my phone and tablet which allows me to seamlessly sync the location of ANY material from my Paperwhite to those devices. Kobo also offers an app and it apparently will sync the page location of any material that you've purchased through the Kobo store.
The Paperwhite was available during Boxing day pricing for $99, and will likely be the same for Cyber Monday. If you can't wait until then, $120 is a reasonable sale price.

1. Visit Manage Your Content and Devices (www.amazon.com/mycd).
2. Select the Settings tab.
3. Under Country Settings, click Change to select an existing address or enter a new address. <- put your new american address here.
the american address can be anything, use google HQ if you want..
seriously, the kindle voyage 2 is going to be released soon, and we canucks have to make due with the paperwhite as our top-end model?
* I know, I know, it's because amazon refuses to pay royalties on the voyage tech in order to release it to canada (too small a market, I guess) but it still sucks. I wanted to upgrade from the paperwhite and I was literally forced to get a kobo h2o if I wanted anything remotely current. when the voyage 2 is released I may get an ameri-friend to ship me one.
Settings -> Registration and Household -> Deregister Device
It will then tell you that your Kindle will no longer be registered to your Amazon account and you can register it to another Amazon account.
After it's deregistered, register it again with your Amazon.com credentials.
Note: I am pretty sure this wipes the device of it's current books too.
btw, this is a great e-reader and I cant live without it
It's more likely that when you bought your Paperwhite from Amazon.ca it came pre-registered to your Amazon.ca account, which is Canadian.
So to use it on the US Kindle store (amazon.com) you first need to de-register it from your Amazon.ca account and register it with your Amazon.com one.
For those with issues on formats I use the free Calibre software to convert my books....works great...
Hope that helps
Because of this you can't read canadian library e-books without downloading the ebook in epub, stripping it of its DRM, and converting it to .mobi, and then sending it your kindle.
In comparison Kobo devices read epub natively and can read borrowed library ebooks without converting them.
That's the only real problem with canadians and kindles, aside from the selection on amazon itself.
The Canadian Kindle store is pretty pathetic compared to the American one so I never bothered to migrate my old account and I don’t want to be forced to do that if I get one of these.
EDIT: Nevermind, got my answer: Yeah you can use it with an Amazon.com account. Might want to mark it as a gift so so there's no account registered with the device so you can use another account immediately.
