"Ink cartridges lose some ink to evaporation over time. This lowers the volume of ink available, and may change the chemistry of the inks. Cartridges cannot be completely sealed due to altitude variations during shipment and temperature variations during storage and use. HP cartridges are designed to operate reliably after a long pre-sale shelf life, and throughout many months of usage once installed in the printer."
How long is 'many months' to you?
For the 61 and 61XL the prices for the high yield are:
Black .... $46.32 ... 480 pages
Colour ... $ 49.55 ... 330 pages
and the combo pack:
Combo ... $69.35 ... 480 pages black & 165 pages colour
The printer in this thread uses the HP 61 and 61XL series cartridges.
CC640W, 4.5 cc good for 200 pages and
CC641W, 13.5 cc good for 600 pages.
So, 12.5 cents per page using the black before taxes and fees if all goes well. You also have the starter in colour good for 165 pages so all together 365 pages at 6.8 cents per page.
EDIT for your enlightenment.
If you replace the starter cartridges with the "high yield" ones at Staples here is the shaft:
HP 60XL Black ...... $55.72
HP 60XL Tri-Color .... $ 60.89
But you can buy them as a combo:
HP 60 Black + HP 60XL Color ... $77.72 (Note black one is the starter.)
Save you the trouble carrying the heavy stuff and not having to worry about it being broken while being tossed around

I've seen a post on RFD that HP starter cartridges nowadays are no different from standard ones.
Can anyone confirm this?
Even the non oems are too expensive.
Best to avoid.
