Amazon.ca Amazon.ca: Google Chromecast HDMI Streaming Media Player $39 + Free Shipping Amazon.ca: Google Chromecast $39 + Free Shipping
get this dealGood news everyone! Right now, the Google Chromecast is available in Canada for $39 for all your wireless streaming needs. Previously, you couldn't find them in Canada and had to travel state-side to get your hands on one. Now, though, you can freely pick it up from Amazon with free shipping.
Not sure if you should make a purchase? If you have a Nexus 7 and/or a Google smartphone, this is pretty much a no brainer. According to Google: Chromecast is a thumb-sized media streaming device that plugs into the HDMI port on your TV. Set it up with a simple mobile app, then send your favourite online shows, movies, music and more to your TV using your smartphone, tablet or laptop. More information can be found here.
Shipping is free. Enjoy!

View allCan the Canadian version of Chromecast be bypassed to access US netflix content? Seems like the instructiosn in this thread by JamesA1 are for his US version of Chromecast?
Thanks
Thanks!
Mine is working ok with:
Plex Media Server 0.9.9.14.531 on Win7
Plex app 3.4.8.177 on Android 4.4.4
Chromecast firmware version 19084
Static route blocking of Google DNS
Anyone seen this before?
It is not Google DNS related as I have set my DNS back to ISP defaults and disabled static routing, still get the same message.
i was worried because with playstation media server i could never get a fluid hd video running.
In fact, you are probably good for 1080p MKV's!
I looked up the CPUMark of your CPU, and it's *very* respectable

I'm guessing mine isn't good enough to stream 720p MKV's either? It's this laptop http://forums.redflagdeals.com/hot-fs-h ... a-1377427/
and that is pure CPU work, AFAIK. and since his CPU is vintage, it'll probably stutter, as JamesA1 pointed out.
my main purposes is to stream video to the tv from pc ... which option is better? thanks
I'm trying to determine if my system will lag the video stream if I have 720p AVI's:

Should I just go for those TV sticks instead?

A lot of these streams are erratic, just as they are with other apps that access the same sources. I find that in the case of TV Portal -> Avia/Localcast -> Chromecast, that produces a lot of annoying pops in the sound, and an occasional loss of connection. When I stream the same video from the same source using Plex (LetMeWatchThis channel) -> Plex app -> Chromecast the stream is just as erratic, but instead of loud pops in the sound there are just brief stumbles that are less annoying. I guess Plex is smoothing out the audio better than the direct stream.
I notice that some of the TV Portal listings have a Chromecast icon on the right. I assumed that meant that the others were not in a Chromecast-compatible format and wouldn't play without real-time transcoding capability, but that doesn't seem to be necessarily true - some without the Chromecast icon played just fine with Avia.[QUOTE]
My guess is the TV Portal player can't send them over, but AVIA and other players have higher compatibility. Or it could be that the developers made an agreement with cetrain streaming sites to give them priority casting fucntionality to help fund development (thats straight speculation, no evidence to support it, just a thought). Native Chromecast functonality is pretty new to TV Portal, so my guess is it will only get better over time. The quality on the links that do stream to chromecast though were pretty good - I was more than satisfied. And there seems to be two major sites and usually about 4 or 5 video options per episode that can be casted - more than enough for me
Personally for shows my favourite is MovieDroid, it's not as a pretty an interface as Showbox, but if you know what you're looking for, it's the quickest loading of all the streaming apps I've tried and it provides quite a few different links as well playback options. Whereas I find the downfall of Showbox is, aside from choosing playback quality, you're stuck with the 1 stream it provides, which can sometimes be hit or miss.
I notice that some of the TV Portal listings have a Chromecast icon on the right. I assumed that meant that the others were not in a Chromecast-compatible format and wouldn't play without real-time transcoding capability, but that doesn't seem to be necessarily true - some without the Chromecast icon played just fine with Avia. But I noticed that those videos had no picture when played with LocalCast, so Avia seems to have a slightly broader compatibility range.
If a selection won't play without transcoding, the same sources are usually available via Plex channel LetMeWatchThis.
I did test both TV Portal and Showbox. So far I prefer showbox because of higher quality.
I'm not sure rooting is of much value at the moment. In the early days it was popular to allow the use of experimental apps beyond the few that Google had approved, and to allow the use of an alternative DNS. But now there are plenty of apps, new ones get approved fairly quickly, and there are some relatively easy work-arounds to use an alternative DNS. But things could change if Google starts getting more restrictive again, and this could be your last chance to root the device.
Also, its definitely worth getting the beta. The autoplaynext episode function works really well with Chromecast
I am using the app on my Galaxy android tablet.
