Starbucks started expanding their "Pick of the Week" program in the US a few months ago, and their Canadian locations are following suit. Starting this week, the Pick of the Week cards (which have previously offered free music downloads from the iTunes music store) will feature free iPhone app downloads as well!

Each week, there will be a new song or app featured on the cards. Grab your card in stores, and then use the code on the back to get your free download. You will need an iTunes store login to redeem your code.

This week's pick is the Scrabble App, and next week's free app will be Snapseed, an image editing app for iPhones and iPads.

    • I'm not a coffee drinker so I've never been to Starbucks but if anyone happens to pick up an extra Scrabble code I would greatly appreciate it.

    • Scrabble app is already free for Android users.

To compete maybe Tim Horton's will give Android users some free apps that are already free.

The reviews of scrabble on Android Market shows people complaining that there are ads and that they should make a paid version to get rid of the ads. The Appstore has both a Free version with ads and a paid one without ads. The one that Starbucks is giving away is the no ad version which is usually $1.99.

    • Worth it if it has no ads AND works. Some reviews are saying the latest update broke a good thing.

I play Words With Friends, which I like a lot, but the interface has become littered with ads and crap ever since Zynga took over. Really kills it. I'd pay a buck or two if I knew that crap would never show up again.

Scrabble on Android is terrible.... I bought the iPhone version, which I think was really worth it over the Free version.

    • I would assume that Starbucks is giving away free apps that are normally paid apps, not free apps that are always free or ad-supported.

I think their reputation will take a hit if they are just promoting apps that are normally free.

    • The ad free version is definitely much better because it is less annoying to play. I used to play the free version of words with friends with ads. The free scrabble is even worse because it has video ads too after you make a move. A bunch of my friends got the starbucks one and it seems to work fine so not sure what you mean by it's broken since I haven't seen it before the update.

    • Supposedly the next free weekly apps are snapseed, then some music artist and then lastly tetris. But only rumored for now.

I don't go and don't have one close by me. If anyone happens to have a chance to grab an extra one, please PM me.

      Many thanks.

    • Apparently, one of the first ones is Scrabble (regularly $1.99)

My regular starbucks used to be very consistent in releasing the "pick of the week" every Tuesday but have become very sloppy. At least today they have the Snapseed app right on time. I never saw Scrabble.

This person has tracked the Canadian "Pick of the Week" since the beginning:

    • Thanks for the information... I've updated the original post.

This week's app is SnapSeed, a well reviewed photo app which is regularly $4.99, although it has gone free several times in the past.

    • So how do you use these codes and where do you get them from? Are they just at the local Starbucks (like on a card or something)? Is there a purchase required if so what do you need to buy?

      Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Just read the first post and that answers all of the questions except if i need to buy anything. Seems not though.

You don't need to buy anything, technically, but some stores put them behind the counter, some are wide open for people to hoard . If they're behind the counter just ask, say you grabbed your coffee but forgot to grab the code (or buy something lol).
