If you can make use of it's focal length, the Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens is a small form factor "pancake" lens with decent Bokeh. It's extremely well received with numerous positive consumers reviews on both Amazon and B&H Photo Video.

View allAh my bad didn't realize it was the 55-250 zoom you were talking about. This lens has been $99 clearance at sears for some time now, and the plastic 50mm 1.8 portrait lens has been $59 there. There were 5 or 6 of the 40 pancake lenses a few weeks ago at our local sears. Perhaps people never think of sears too often for camera accessories or perhaps the price isn't displayed well in the glass display case, but even at $99 they don't seem to be selling at our local sears in charlottetown. So check your local sears as well, you might score a clearance model at this price also.
This lens is silent on my t4i in video mode, I don't understand where people find it noisy. Remember seeing one you-tube review where the reviewer had it sitting on a hard wood floor and it was audible, what else would you expect?
I also keep my 40mm stm on my camera as it is the one I use the most for impromptu pics and of my kids and the focus has never jammed on me. Owned it for must be a year and a half now, bought it at FS PMed to amazons price of $129 at that time and have had no problems with it.
40mm pancake gets my vote for price/optics. i only sold it because i did not like it on a crop body. i have a 6D full frame now. would buy the 40mm for $100 in a heartbeat

The latest Canon 17-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS STM is also an excellent lens surpassing previous versions.
Had both of them before going to FF and L lenses.
I'm more optimistic and wouldn't shoot down the 24 til it comes out.
I just tried PMing FS (Hwy 7 & Warden) with ME and they gave me a hard time, checked the Canon site. Since it wasn't listed as an authorized retailer they said no deal. I might try another FS and see.
The 40mm is a pretty good all-rounder and a good introduction to prime lenses / wide aperture shooting. At this price hard to go wrong, you can always resell it. I personally love my Pentax version of this lens, but I know thatmany find it to be a weird focal range.
Compare it to other manufacturer's offerings, and you'll see what I mean (Pentax and Fuji are also crop only, and the Voigtlander is FF, but no AF). Canon's pricing compared to competitors for this lens and the 10-18 is unreal. As long as the 24mm is not a total dog, just like the 10-18 isnt, Canon will have another reason for people to shoot with their brand

PS. Yes I know the Pentax and Fuji got some bells and whistles, but I dont think they can justify the $300-500 price difference.
For pics, it's stellar and has a quite usable DoF wide open.
I'm surprised by how well it's rated on DxO charts for best lenses and it's low price pops out at you compared to the other FF lenses in the list that are exorbitantly expensive.
It's about time Canon made an EF-S 24, 40 is a little tight on a 1.6 in terms of how much room you have to work with if you want an adult's full height in the frame. Should sell well as a walk around on crop.

It's also not a 100% chance your autofocus will jam either. If you don't keep the lens on your camera in your bag, you are pretty much safe.

.
In noisy environments, on auto, it's fine.
Suffice to say, STM characteristics are not consistent between different lenses that advertise that motor.
It's major pros are optical quality and small form factor.

Total: $97.88
This was west broadway location.
Got it price beat at the futureshop for $86 + tax
24mm on 1.6 CF is pretty much 40mm on FF.
$100 is a bargain as a walk-around on full frame when you don't carry your other gear.
