Fido calls this new perk Data Bytes and it's only available to those on a Fido Pulse Plan -- text PULSE to 222 to check if you're on an eligible plan. Eligible customers are entitled to one hour of unlimited data usage up to five times a month -- completely free!

To start, you'll need the Fido My Account app (Android, iOS). Select the Data Bytes banner and shake your phone for three seconds to begin a Data Bytes session. You have one hour of unlimited data usage that does not contribute to your monthly data cap. You'll get a notification once your one hour session is over.

You can have up to five Data Bytes sessions per month and you must wait a minimum of 24 hours between sessions. The service is not available in extended coverage areas, while roaming or on Wi-Fi and Data Bytes sessions cannot be stopped, paused, resumed or carried over to another month.

    • Interesting. Good for those times where your kids are in near meltdown mode and you just want to do some streaming video without worrying about your data caps.

      The concept is a bit strange. Some providers such as Electronic Box used to provide unlimited data at night (such as from 2am to 6am) which makes sence..

      I can see a barely see the appeal of the Data Bytes.. If you never watch Netflix on your phone but you're stuck somewhere with no WiFi or were it's very slow so you would use the Data Bytes.

      But after working at Fido for about 6 years, I can't imagine the number of time where people will think they were using the Data bytes but it wasn't activated or it expired. The billing will be a fiasco. At least if I remember correctly there's a cap of 100$ so it won't be as bad as those data roaming charges stories...

      It will also be useful if you need to use the mobile hot spot once in a while.

      Mine shows as a "Bring your own phone plan" and not a pulse plan

    • Those special plans ($40 - 4GB, $60 - 6 GB, etc.) aren't pulse plans. They're just regular data, talk, and text plans. However just check in the my account app and you never know. Also on your bills too.
