    • Any limitations that you saw. I transferred from SDM to Safeway for the 7x airmiles (which I'll likely never use anyways). Any indication of how long you have to keep your Rx's there (outside from as long as it takes to redeem the 10vouchers which would for most be 10 months?)

      Upon closer inspection of the fine print;

      -Not all prescriptions are transferable by law
      -Ask a SDM pharmacist for more information
      -Restrictions on use and redemption of vouchers apply
      -See vouchers for details. Limited time offer and while supplies last. Offer void where prohibited by law

      I guess it would be best to check with a SDM pharmacist for complete details.

      based on your note.. only idiots would fill at SDM. However, most pharmas charge $10. But I am not sure if its per drug. If you take 5 drugs they make $50? Sounds like drug money.

      Not all SDM dispensing fees are the same. The Shoppers on Lonsdale in NV is $9.85, the discount places are $8.60- I much prefer the service I get at the SDM from London Drugs or Walmart, I'm willing to pay the extra $1.25 !

      Holy cow. Not only do you people in Ontario, have the highest auto insurance rates in Canada but you also have the highest dispensing fees.

      Pharmacists here have a monopoly. IIRC only one school (U of T) graduates pharmacists, and about half of them are female, likely taking leave eventually while raising a family. This limits the number of pharmacists available, increasing their fees. The obvious solution would be to train more pharmas, just like they should train more doctors, but politicians seem to be too dumb to realise that.

      Your reasoning is so flawed I don't know where to begin. Let's start with pharmacist having a monopoly in Ontario. There is no monopoly. They get trained at UofT and so does lawyers, doctors, dentists, engineers. I guess everyone of these profession must be a monopoly. There is usually only one university per province that trains these professions so it is nothing unique to Ontario. Also more pharmacist doesn't mean the dispensing fee will be less. The number of pharmacists doesn't dictate the cost of dispensing fees. It depends on the services offered, insurance companies, provincial health agencies, and location (rich vs poor neighborhoods). Also, your comment about females is borderline sexist. There are many female professions that after having a child continue with there career.

      Just called my local SDM and they said it's not valid in Ontario as it is ILLEGAL to give points/rewards on prescriptions in Ontario.

      Did a bit of google searching to verify and the pharmacist was indeed correct and that this has been illegal since January 1, 2004...I found the following articles:

      Yes, I asked them about switching as well...I also mentioned this promotion specifically and she was aware of it...she said that head office told them that it will not be valid in Ontario due to regulations that are in place here.

      I find it interesting that people think pharmacists are ripping you off. They actually publish their dispensing fee which is the only income they get to pay staff, manage overhead, pay rent and keep thousands of dollars of product on hand so people can get it when they need it. Stores mark up their clothing by at least 100%, they just don't market them as "olympic hoodie:cost $25 profit $25". As for a monopoly as in another post, I think you wanted smart people who have graduated from University to be taking care of your health and not some high school dropout!

It must be a transferred prescription (so a new prescription doesn't count), one time only per person. You can redeem one $10 GC or one 6000 SDM coupon each time you fill a prescription.


      Honestly, I don't think shoppers should be doing this. It is a highly unprofessional way of promoting themselves. There is going to be an uproar amongst pharmacists and complaints from other pharmacies. I don't think this will last long and the college of pharmacist might crack down on this eventually.

Mind you, their despensing fee is $4.11 in Ontario....The prescription cost is shown seperately on the receipt.
      I know that not everyone has Costco membership but still...trying to clarify the prescription cost statement.

      I agree that this is not true. Once I needed an EpiPen (the Twinject one actually) late at night, and so had to use Shoppers. The pharmacist herself was surprised at the markup on the product. As I pay for my prescriptions myself (I do submit receipt later to my wife's insurance plan) she felt bad about it, and told me directly that when I need a refill, I should get the prescription transferred to another pharmacy in the future!!

      In addition, I have heard that, especially for generic drugs, pharmacies get some kind of a rebate or kick back from the pharmaceutical companies for selling their product.

      I don't have any perscriptions myself but I wonder if there are online pharmacies that might have lower perscription prices and lower dispensing fees?

    • The kickback from generic companies was true before 2006 but not anymore - in Ontario at least. The government closely regulates the cost of all generic and brand medications. Essentially, the only money pharmacies make IS from dispensing fees (and the Ontario government limits this to $7). There is mark up on prescription medication but it is only a few percent (usually less than 10%). For example, for a Penicillin prescription, the cost of the medication is about $1 - do you think pharmacies can survive by charging you 10% markup only and no dispensing fee for this kind of medication?

      People don't think about the costs involved in operating a pharmacy. When a prescription is sent through insurance online (ie. billed to your drug plan), it costs close to $1 each time it is submitted, even the little labels on the vial cost about $0.90 per sheet, those plastic vials themselves cost about $0.40/vial. Let's say that pharmacy must send the claim through your insurance company for the $1.00 Penicillin prescription, the pharmacy is out over $2 already and that's not including any other expense at all. The fee is the MAIN source of payment for the pharmacy.

      The reason for higher dispensing fees for places like Shoppers is because of CONVENIENCE! It costs money to keep a pharmacy open until midnight or even 24 hrs. This is why you pay more. You can get your medication anytime you like. The problem I have with Shoppers is their HUGE markup for everything else in their stores! Their non-prescription products are much more than everywhere else so I don't get anything there except if it's an emergency. Yes, you get Optimum points, but you end up paying so much more in order to get the points anyways. So when you redeem those points to get things for "free"... well, you've already paid for it.

      Yes, Costco does charge less for dispensing fee and they have very little markup because they generate their main profit from MEMBERSHIP FEES. This is the same reason they can sell many other things for much less also. My main objection with Costco pharmacies is you never see the pharmacist! The few times I have been there, the only person I was able to speak directly to was the technician or cashier. I had questions and couldn't even see the pharmacist, which is not the case for Shoppers, PharmaPlus, Loblaws, etc. The Costco pharmacist is always behind the glass wall, in their dispensing room and never goes to where the people are (in my case anyways).

      Speaking of monopolies in Ontario, that is very untrue. The main problem now is because of heavier regulations in Ontario it is harder for independent pharmacies to operate and make a profit now. Only the huge pharmacy retail chains like Shoppers, PharmaPlus, Loblaws, Walmart, Zellers, Costco can afford to survive. There are fewer and fewer independent neighborhood pharmacies which can compete and stay in business now and essential allowing the major corporations to control the direction and profession of pharmacy/pharmacists. This isn't a problem yet but in the future, it will be... but that's another discussion altogether.
