Scrap-It: Turn in an Older Car & Get 24 Months of Transit Passes or $1000 Car-Sharing Credit (BC)

The BC Scrap-It program, available to residents of British Columbia, is designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by getting older vehicles off the road. What's in it for you? A whole lot, as it turns out!

Incentives of up to $1250 are available to BC residents who turn in an older (1995 or previous) car and either purchase a newer, fuel-efficient vehicle or simply do not replace the car at all.

Some of the incentives include:

A 12 Month, Three-Zone Translink MultiPass (Lower Mainland)
24 Months of Adult BC Transit Monthly Passes (Victoria)
For the purchase of a bicycle, a $100 discount at point of sale plus $600 from Scrap-It
A $1000 Car-Sharing Credit with Zipcar, the Cooperative Auto Network or the Victoria Car Share Co-Op
For the purchase of a new car, a $250 discount at point of sale plus either $500 or $1000 (depending on the vehicle purchased)

The program is open by application only and vehicles must be insured; produced in 1995 or before; registered in BC and in driving condition. Any break in insurance coverage in the previous 12 months will disqualify the vehicle. So there are a few hoops to jump through but the rewards are definitely worth it!

- This program only became available nationwide on Jan 1, 2009 although
  I think it's been available for years in B. C. with much higher
  amount of reward.

  You call them up, send in your ownership slip, they call

  you get a cheque of $300 in the mail.

- There should be a new program this fall. The auto manufactures are asking the government to give purchasers $3500, for older cars, to put towards a new car. This week there were a few news stories implying the new program is on its way.

  The idea was proposed, but I don't know if they'll actually do it. It will probably be "upto $3500" too, depending on how much you spend.

  1995 model year and older vehicles that are in running condition and have been registered and properly insured for the last 6 months are eligible for the program and participants can choose one of many rewards.
  Car has to be in running condition. Too bad because my nephew has a broken down '86 BMW 325e he needs to get rid of. The right rear wheel is at a strange angle and the car won't budge. I think the differential is jammed.

- I'm not complaining but it's $3,500 or so in the US and $4,000 in Europe. Why is it that Canadians are the ones that usually get shafted?

- $300 is an insult. You can sell a handful of parts off the car and make that much. Taillights usually sell for $30 to $50...

- I loved the Alberta program. We used it on my wife's car a five years ago. $1000 towards a brand new vehicle. The car we gave them she only paid $750 for and it had a nice Sony stereo in it we took out.
  
  At that time, conditions were had to be registered for last 12 months, 1992 or older, and had to be brought in under it's own power...cudn't be towed in.

  While that's true, in most cases people aren't interested in having the heap sitting in their driveway while they try to sell bits and pieces of it. For that matter, the work involved in removing any pieces to sell is also not appealing to most people. This gives an easy alternative to the $50 a wrecker would typically give you.

  the government is going to revisit the program this fall and the rewards are likely going to increase. the current $300 reward in ontario is ridiculous in comparison to incentives given in US & BC.

  So take of the taillights before you trade it in. Then you're getting $400 in total.

- I would like Metropasses for a year. This would promote the switch to public transit and not have the government shell out cash.
  
  We have a car that is running but stopped insurance because we didn't want to spend money on it if we weren't using it. We can turn the car on when they come and drive it on the driveway before the tow it.

- I traded in my 93 Caravan with a blown transmission as part of the BC Scrap It program. I got an $1200 electric bike and 1 year of bus passes.
