Port Mann Bridge: Get a Tolling Account, Get Half-Price Tolls For One Year + $30 Credit (GVRD)
This deal has expired!
Love it or hate it, commuters in the Lower Mainland will soon be paying tolls on the new Port Mann Bridge. The good news (besides a shorter, less congested commute) is that the first three months of tolls will be reduced to half price -- $1.50 instead of $3. The better news is that if you register for a tolling account at TReO.ca you'll enjoy the half-price toll rate through November of 2013 and get a $30 credit.
When you register you'll receive a decal for your vehicle's windshield, decals will send radio signals to a receiver when you cross the bridge and your monthly toll bill will be calculated from that. You can arrange for pre-authorized payment or pre-payment.
All registered cars, pick-up trucks, and SUVs will receive a $30 credit when you register it by November 30, 2012, which equals to 20 free trips across the Port Mann (this promo is not open to large vehicles). Credits are valid until May 31, 2013. Registered vehicles will also receive the $1.50 rate through November 30, 2013 as opposed to February 28, 2013 for those who do not register.
For more information, or to register your vehicle(s), visit TReO.ca.

The housing here costs much less than it does elsewhere in the lower mainland.
And one of the premiers herself claimed that it would cause a gridlock because of the cities' citizens' lower income, on average - hence why she contested the initial plan to charge $3 each way.
This won't be the only toll on the Transcanada. Folks in Nova Scotia pay $4 each way. In Ontario, they get what they don't pay for, most of the Transcanada is a 80km per hour, one lane per direction highway. A new toll bridge bypassing Montreal (Autouroute 30) will soon be used by most Transcanada users not going to Montreal.
Would it make more sense to raise the gas tax? Probably. But bridges are very expensive, and the "benefit" is far greater than the limited gas tax spent on crossing the bridge.

I'm curious to see if people will actually be able to drive at 80kph for the whole stretch from Cassiar through, and on past the bridge.
I'll bet there will still be rush hour slowdowns(1st Ave,Willingdon,Kensington,Cariboo,Brunette,Mary Hill, etc),and by the time it's all paid for(by us) they'll need even more lanes.
I just don't see it being the dream solution the Gov't is selling it as.
Time will tell.
