  Got some stuff from Banana Republic and they gave me coupons for 40% off 1 item at full price on Wednesdays in April.
  
  The following April dates have 40% off coupons:
  April 4
  April 11
  April 18
  April 25
  
  If you go in store and buy something, they will give you a coupon packet. Or if you ask a customer rep nicely, they may give you one as well. These are 4 coupons.

  BTW, I got this at the Banana Republic at Bayview Village, but I'm sure they are giving these coupons everywhere.

Now it seems like they have a 40%-off-one-item sale every week and hand them out freely. Signs of a desperate company during desperate times.

  Actually I disagree...While this is a completely different industry, the computer game digital distributor Valve via their Steam platform regularly offers incredible discounts on popular PC games, anywhere from 50 to 90% off.
  
  When they sell a game at sale price vs full price, they've realized that their sale volume is so much more that they make more money than they would selling at full price.

  I would think the same principle applies to clothing (where the markup is huge).

- They perpetually have 40% off sales. Their shirts are decently made and fit well, but are outrageously overpriced. $2 for materials, labour, and shipping, factor in maybe $10 for marketing/merchandising/shipping/local labour, and still have a healthy $72 profit margin per shirt
