Not to derail this thread and pardon my ignorance, but I have my first anniversary renewal coming up on a domain. Is there any way to cut down on this $13?

    • I don't need a domain but I'll register SCREWGODADDY.com just so they loose money.

Ps : The trick to be safe is to cancel renewal right after purchase.

Anyone who uses the internet should care... There are much more respectable domain registration companies that are just as affordable, and not as sleazy as GoDaddy.

They'll screw your invoice and expect you don't notice.

They'll business model is to make their money by scamming from mom and dads Aka. Noobs.

There's not much left to argue for them at this point.

all large hosting companies do that to some extend. Doesn't make it acceptable but it's common practice.

I know they try to up sell you, but I haven't seen unwanted charges yet.

Do they automatically renew you after the term is done?

only if you CHOOSE to have auto-renew enabled.

Honestly I've always loved godaddy.. everything is really easy to use, always have promotions etc etc..

They do if you don't change it to "manual", this is how most registrars work.

Common guys enough of this hate talk about GoDaddy, it's not cents we are talking about it is saving 11$ for something that doesn't exist to begin with. Where is my domain? I can't touch it, I can't smell it, I can't taste it, I can't see it, I can't hear it, it's nowhere, it's just a name! If I call my dog "GoDaddy" I don't have to pay anyone for that, then why would I have to pay someone to call my website "ScrewGoDaddy.com" ???
You can make so much more difference in the world by donating the 11$ you save from GoDaddy to a food bank, than giving it to some gready registrar.

Use code h4hp99 to get any new domain (.COM, .US, .MOBI, .BIZ, .NET, .ORG, .CA, .CO.UK and .IN) for just $0.99 plus tax for the whole year.

It's only for the first year and for new registrations only. It will expire after 10,000 registrations or at 11:59 PM PST on 7/31/2012 (whichever comes first). Customers may not use gift cards, PayPal® or AliPay to redeem this offer.

I believe it's regular price of $12.99/year after first year.
Thanks for the post. Been looking to get a cheap deal on a domain name. I don't care about all this SOPA trash talk of Godaddy. I just want to use them to get the deal (after all that is what this site is for, DEALS) and then I can always transfer and use domain elsewhere.

Wouldn't want to mislead you but when I purchased my domain, I recall it asking me if I want to have auto-renew on or not.

If you already purchased it, go into "My Account" > Domains > choose your domain and launch :

Under domain information youll see this, just set it to off if you dont want to autorenew

that's a very naive perspective. there are lots of things that exist here, like customer service. I've had to help a number of friends with godaddy problems, including one human rights domain that was lost because it's not in godaddy's profit model to go the extra cm to help their customers. Many of the smaller slightly costlier registrars will go that extra distance for you. Godaddy is, at best, the McDonald's of registrars, but their president has also done some buffoonish things, like openly supporting republican candidates, supporting sopa, and the elephant idiodicy, and their dumb sexist approach to advertising, that are meaningful in the world and affected by your decisions.

    • I've explained the address bar enough times in my life that I seriously question the value of a domain. Even banks recommend to customers that they use Google or Bing to find their web site. Yes, customers manage to mess up bmo.ca and TD.com and end up on phishing sites.

If you do bother with a domain, be sure that there is a version with www . Don't get me started on that (some people are still typing http:// !!!!)

That said, whatever your url, get one with the name of your company or website in it, as that apparently increases Google ranking. So if you get a free j.mp/ ,put the name of your company at the end. Also, it is not rocket science to set up a blog and twitter that link to your web site. Better yet, forget the website and just get a blog (Google likes sites that update frequently).

If you are interested in the "official" Occupy Wall Street website, would you type their domain? No, you would Google it. And yet they paid $8,000 for theirs. Proof that direct democracy is very, very, expensive.

By the way, this is not me in the video. Although I'm amused that I'm not the only one that this exasperates.

    • No one complaining here has spent five minutes researching any other companies' business practices--or even who owns GoDaddy now.

And they haven't screwed up my invoice once, with much opportunity to do so.

There are always 30% coupons for renewals.

The point is, the name and everything associated with it should be buried.

My bad experiences trying to help people get good service from them are very real.

imo, if you actually value a domain, or you care about the influence of your dollar, you'd be crazy to go with them.

So if you hate them and wanna stick it to 'em, register a domain with this coupon!
