Boxing Day 101

By Danielle O'Hanley

Yes, we know. The clock is ticking and we're mere days away from the holidays. But here in the RedFlagDeals.com office, we're more interested in what comes afterwards...Boxing Day!

Whether you're a Boxing Day newbie or vet, here are a few tips to make sure you make the most of your shopping experience on the 26th.

Ahead of time:

  • Do your research. Online is a great place to start. Read up on the products you're interested in, browse ratings and reviews
  • Create accounts at retailers ahead of time, or update your mailing/credit card information if you already have an account. This can save you precious seconds that could mean the difference between getting that hot item or missing out
  • Along the same lines...make sure you know your secure logins (for VISA and MasterCard SecureCode)
  • Pay off your credit card bill and make sure you have enough credit on hand to make your purchases
  • Bookmark the stores and items you want to shop beforehand (a handy tip for Firefox users: use Ctrl + D to bookmark a page quickly)
  • If you plan on shopping in stores, do a trip around the mall and try on the clothing items you have in mind. Many stores will close their fitting rooms on Boxing Day.

Day of:

  • Make sure you have some cash on you, as well as an alternative way to pay. Some stores will have separate lines for various payment methods to keep things moving quickly
  • Shop early! Whether you're shopping online or in stores, hot items will sell out quickly
  • Patience is key. It's not uncommon for merchant websites to buckle under the heavy load of visitors, or for malls to have huge lineups.
  • Stay focused on your goals. Refer back to your shopping list to avoid getting caught up in the frenzy and overspending

Starting next week, we'll be lauching our Boxing Day section, where you'll be able to find a comprehensive list of Boxing Day flyers (who needs mail!). If you have particular items in mind, you can set up alerts to get an email notification whenever a keyword is posting in the forums. Start planning now to have a great Boxing Day!
